Hello everyone and welcome to Block 6, the final block of this year's contests.  I'm getting this week's contest started early since I will be away from the computer tonight.  We still have seven spots left in our tournament (1 for the Block 6 winner and 6 spots for the genre winners), so this block is sure to be a good one.  This is a very special block, as all of the games and rules have been created by Twin Galaxies record holder Tom Votava (known as rdrunner here on NA).  Thank you Tom for taking the time to come up with some games and rules to challenge us all   This week's game is going to be Star Soldier.  Here are the rules:

  • Backwards warping by failing to defeat a boss is not allowed
  • Play until Game Over
  • Highest score wins

The contest ends Sunday, 9/23/12 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name must be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  Good luck everyone and have fun.

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

Beware the Bimmy Marsh!

Thanks Bimmy. It was a lot of fun cooking up the challenges for this block. Here's hoping that I made some decent choices.

Okay, Star Soldier. Really tough shooter. Have only beaten it with save states. However, the game can be really high-scoring once you know a few things, namely the three ways to score 80,000 point bonuses on almost every level.

Check out this old VHS video on NES games (not a classic, but it has some charm). It has a good summary of how to get these bonuses. The section on Star Soldier starts at 2:19.

My best score on Star Soldier is 2,281,800 (stage 12). It gets really tough at the end, but way higher scores are possible. I'm interested to see what you guys can do with this game!

Good luck!

Star Soldier sends me into a frustrated rage.
I'm not very good at it and the under/over platform thing drives me crazy.
But maybe I'll get drunk later and give it a shot.

As a point of clarification, is there any specified emulator (for those of use using emulators) and platform? By that I mean, I normally play on a hacked Wii using the downloadable NES emulator, which is FCE Ultra GX.

On a side note, I presume that turbo controllers are forbidden, is it right Tom?

Yup, that's right.  No turbo controllers.

The game is a bit of a hand cramp, but there are powerups that give you autofire, if you can hang on to them.

Like 1943 if you don't defeat the boss you do the level over.

If you have any GBA signage or kiosk I would be interested. Please send me a PM because I'm only here about once a month now but I'm still VERY interested in large system signage or small playable kiosks related to the GBA.

If you get the power-up you can just hold the button down.
Also if you don't kill the face, you won't go back, that is a mini-boss.
You only "backwards warp" if you fail to kill a Star Brain and you see the message Star Brain escapes and you do the level over again.  If that happens, I guess you have to start over since this contest doesn't allow it.
Sometimes the brain escapes really fast.

Oops, you mean the 80,000 bonus from the video.
Yeah, not sure if that can be done without turbo.

You kind of can't.
Yeah, that's the worst part.
You are safe when you are under those platforms, but you also can't shoot anything under there.
Then you pop out and get blasted.

Any additional info about the autofire powerup would be greatly appreciated by my right hand

I think you can auto-fire as soon as you get 1 power-up.
Maybe it's 2.

Just to recap the questions people have asked (though you guys have covered them really well already ):

--The rule about failing to defeat a boss involves the "brains" at the end. That is the only enemy that can push you backwards into the level if it escapes (like in 1943).

--I can't remember if I've ever gotten the 80,000 for shooting the head quickly without turbo. There are people out there who can button mash pretty fast though, so I wouldn't put it past anyone to do it.

--I didn't know about that strategy wiki site, but READ IT. The stuff in there is AWESOME. Great find!
