Good point, so absent water levels, though...

So that's what the crystal does?

Heck.

Did a good bit better this time, I got a perfect score on the surfing bonus.

Crystal seems pretty worthless to me. Unless I am doing something wrong, it wouldn't let me have a weapon along with it. So what the point?

Sure it does, I'm able to have a weapon, a dino, and the crystal all together. Crystal gives you an extra hit point, very worthy item unless you don't even get hit, but seeing as how no one has beaten it yet with 1 life, unless most of those deaths are by falling down pits (I know half of mine are), then you definitely should consider using it.

What Miss Clawful said...the crystal is incredibly useful.  There are way too many "oops!  Oh SHIT!" moments in this game where an extra hit point makes a huge difference.

Tried and tried but could not pass the ice level of the second world, either I run off a ledge even with the blue dino, or I take too long trying to make the necessary careful jumps and Higgins starves to death, urgh. But at one point I wanted to see what the skip option in one of the bonus rooms did (never took this route before, thought I'd just skip doing the rest of that stage that I was on), so I ended up bypassing the ice level, though died on the boss' level instead having lost my red dino and with jumps being so hard to make. Probably the best I'm going to do, my highest with taking all level up to the ice one is 43.850, but since we're going for score here and it don't matter about the skipping levels I'll post my best, 50.700, even if I skipped the one that I just don't have the skill to beat. If I were playing on my NES I know I'd be somewhere in the 3rd world before my first death, but that's not happening this week.

^^^ You don't really "skip" levels in the crystal rooms, so much as fight through an alternate level path (unless you take the actual warps with the pterodactyl)

Ah, I see what you mean by alternate routes, I did not know that. I passed the ice level finally, next was a sky level, failed there, score was 46.850, fell short a bit on score, but at least I got through the ice cavern.

Looks like I come to the end of the road, wanted to see how many tries it would take me to pass the sky level, wasted 5 lives before I made it through it, but then the very next level, the waterfalls, another handful of deaths. Ouch, my chances of getting through what I did of the game plus either or both of these levels without dying is very slim, though I can use the skip option to take the alternate route which is quite a bit easier.

I have no problem with the water levels in this game, other than the general feeling I have with most water levels in games, swimming isn't fun. The ice and sky levels are what I hate, even with a controller I had a hard time with them other times that I played this game series.

I've found that as long as you're hurling hammers as fast as possible, the water levels are pretty safe.

The number one killer for me is stupid-death-in-a-pit...

Mine is gettting hit by something on a dino and getting knocked back into something else. (Typically a pit).

One time I even ran into the first boss, losing my crystal, my dino, and my life in a fraction of a second.

No, the worst is riding a dino, falling off and immediately landing on a flame or an enemy.

BTW, who starts a fire on top of a cloud?

I read somewhere today that getting the diamond is based on whether your fruit count is odd or even.

That's entirely possible. Since the "hold right" method seems kind of inconsistent.
