Welcome to the officially unofficial 1st annual NES Homebrew Player's Competition (HBPC). This competition is not officially associated with NintendoAge but I will be using the forum to host it. If the proper people think that this is a good idea and it is popular enough, maybe we can discuss making it official. For now, this is just for fun.
If you are like me, I have a lot of NES Homebrew games sitting on my shelf that don't get a lot of love (or none at all). With so many quality new games that have been released over the past few years, I figured it was time to create a competition and put them to good use. If anyone would like to help or be a contest moderator, please contact me.
Now on to the rules! Most of these are loosely based off the NA Weekly Contest. I figured there was no reason to reinvent the wheel when it was already perfected.

Overview
There will be 10 Homebrew games played in the regular season competition between January and October. At the end of the regular season, a tournament of 3 games will be held in November and December to determine the 2018 Homebrew Champion. We will try to pick games that are still available for purchase or are free rom downloads.
How to Submit Scores
- Scores must be sumbitted in the form of a picture of the entire TV screen. Your NA user name MUST clearly be in the picture in some physical form, for example, written on paper. It cannot be added to the picture digitally. Screenshots will not be accepted. Please type out your score in the post as well in bold format.
- Submitted scores must be within the posted timeframe for that game. Please do not submit scores from previous runs.
- Find and edit your original post for that week's game to update your score. You can update your score as many times as you like within the posted timeframe. You are allowed to bump the thread to announce your new score.
- Only include the score in your submission post. We don't want to have to search the post for your score.
What Platforms are Allowed
- NTSC Systems are allowed. No PAL. This creates a level playing field. You can use clone systems as long as they are NTSC.
- When legal, PowerPaks, Everdrives, and Emulators are allowed. Games must be played at 100% speed, no cheating! Please, do not use pirated ROMs! Some developers have released their ROM for free, those are fine (such as Alter Ego).
Participants
- Everyone is free to participate, including deveolpers, producers, and testers of the game being played. I will try not to double up on games from the same developer in the same year, especially if they are an active participant.
Revisions and Editions
- For many games, all revisions and editions will be allowed. However, there may be some cases where we ask you to not use a certain edition of the game.
Controllers
- Turbo and Slow Motion Controllers are not allowed! Other than that, feel free to use any other controller.
- If there are any other features on a controller that allows a competitive advantage, it will not be allowed.
Regular Season
- There will be 1 game played each month from January though October.
- Each game will start on the 1st of each month and run for 2 weeks.
- Rules for the game will be posted on the 1st of the month in a new thread. Once the new thread is posted rules are up, the game is live until the posted end date and time. All times are in NA format.
- At the conclusion of the game, points will be awarded to each participant depending on how they finish.
- These points will accumulate each month and will be your total score for the leaderboard.
- Once the current game has concluded, the next game will be announced. However, the rules for the next game won't be posted until the 1st of the next month. This is to prevent people from creating scores before the start of the contest.
Awarding Points
- Points will be awarded points for each game depending on how you placed.
1st – 10 points
2nd – 9 points
3rd – 8 points
4th – 7 points
5th – 6 points
6th – 5 points
7th – 4 points
8th – 3 points

- There will be no minimum requirements for posting a score to recieve participation points. We don't want to discourage anyone from trying. However, you must post a score to recieve the points.
Leaderboard
- The leaderboard will be the accumulations of points scored during the regular season.
- The leaderboard will be used to determine tournament positions.
Tournament
- The tourament will be held in November and December.
FORMAT
- The top 4 finishers of the regular season will qualify for the finals tournament.
- Anyone that does not qualify for the finals will be entered into a consolation tournament.
- To participate in either tournament, you must have at least played in 1 regular season contest.
- 3 games will be played.
- If you are unable to participate in all 3 contests of the finals tournament, please let us know beforehand so we can properly place particpants.
- Points will be scored as followed per contest and will accumulate to your tournament total:
Finalists:
1st - 5 Points
2nd - 4 Points
3rd - 3 Points
4th - 2 Points
Consolations:
1st - 5 Points
2nd - 4 Points
3rd - 3 Points
4th - 2 Points

Awards
- All 4 finalists will be awarded a free numbered commemorative cartridge that will match their place.
- The champion of the consolation tournament will recieve a free standard commemorative cartridge.
- Standard cartridges will be available to purchase by other participants of the contest. To qualify as a buyer, you must participate in at least 1 contest during the year. No Exceptions! The purchase of these cartridges will be used to cover costs of running the contest including materials used to make the commemorative carts given as prizes and gifts to those who contributed to the contest. Any profit will be donated to the NA Server fund as I don't want to make any money on this. I will provide final dollars in this thread to show where the money went. Remember, by purchasing a cart, you are supporting the future of this contest. If it ends up costing me a lot of money, I will no longer be able to award prizes.
- Final note: I will not participate in the finals. I will participate in the consolation tournament just for fun so I can compare my scores with everyone else! However, if I should win the Consolation bracket, the commemorative cartridge will be awarded to the runner up.
Cheating
- We are trusting you to follow the rules and make this fun and fair for everyone. Any scores that are submitted where cheating is suspected will be tossed out. This is for fun and no one likes a cheater!
- If cheating is suspected, we may ask the player to provide evidence of the score, such as a video run through proving that score can be achieved fairly.
- Please, do not use glitches to ramp a score. If there are known glitches to a game that I am not aware of, please post it in the game thread for us to review if it is legal to use or if the rules of the game need to be altered to prevent unfair advantages.
- The use of any game enhancers (Game Genie) is strictly forbidden. This also includes features in emulators or on clones systems that can give a competitive advantage.
- Please notify a contest moderator if cheating is suspected by a member.
Be Kind To Others
- Again, this is supposed to be fun. Please refrain from any posting that disrupts the contest. All are encouraged to discuss the game being played and particitpate in some friendly banter. If the contest moderators feel that a participant is not behaving properly, that particpant will be banned from the competition.
Prizes
- Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 participants at the end of the tournament and to others as determined at a later time. More on prizes will be known once a tournament format is figure out. We also don't know what the prizes will be at this time.
- Other prizes may be awarded during the season.
- If anyone has ideas for prizes or wants to donate anything, please contact a contest moderator. Prizes not announced and awarded by the contest moderators will not be tolerated.
*All rules are sublect to change at any time due to unforseen circumstances.
