Game #1: Super Mario Kart
Rules
  • Goal -> Fastest combined time from 5 tracks
  • Bonus Point -> Under 8'00"
  • Select Time Trial.  You will need to submit times for the following tracks
    • Donut Plains 1
    • Bowser Castle 2
    • Choco Island 2
    • Ghost Valley 3
    • Rainbow Road
  • You will need to submit 4 different pictures, each from race's end.  Do not submit scores from the track selection screen.  Please also put all 4 pics in the same post.
  • Your final time will be the cumulative results of the 4 tracks.  Anyone who cannot submit times for all 4 tracks can still earn participation credit for partial submissions
  • If it helps you keep track of your best scores easier, your save data can be erased by starting up the game and then pressing L + R + A + X + Y.  This will re-lock the Special Cup
  • Unlocking the Special Cup is done by placing 1st in the first three cups on 50CC and 100CC
  • The Special Cup can also be unlocked by the following method:  Go to Time Trial or 2P Match Race, put the cursor on Mushroom Cup and press: L,R,L,R,L,L,R,R,A. You will need to input this each time you turn the system on, but your times will keep
Game #2: Tetris Attack
Rules

  • Goal -> High Score
  • Tiebreaker -> Earlier Level
  • Bonus point -> 40,000+
  • Select the Stage Clear mode
  • Play until Game Over
  • Take a pic of your high score on the Game Over screen
  • No continues allowed
  • The score caps at 99,999.  If you max the score immediately take a picture as the tiebreaker is progression, or lack thereof
  • The Bowser level after Stage 3-5 is a bonus level.  You do not have to defeat him.  Choose to continue if he beats you.
  • I'm unsure if the game shows a high score after beating the game.  Take a pic on the final boss as insurance if necessary.

Alright, I'll be sure to find some time for Mario Kart. I wasn't very good at it last year, and won't be again this year, but I'll have fun with it!

Well...isn't Tetris Attack a charming little puzzle game. Haven't really ever played it but gave it a go last night and pulled an 18k score. Felt okay about it...then I watched Ichinisan's video...well  . Made it to 4-3 or 4-4 if I remember correctly and it started getting intense.

Although I wouldn't have any chance of making the tournament, I might just sub a score to mix things up! I do suck at that version of MK tho...

It's fantastic! Obvious licensing issues with the name prevented it from being included on SNES Classic Edition. The Japanese version (Panel de Pon) was included on the Super Famicom Classic Mini.

I can see from Ichi's video that I play Tetris Attack all wrong. I can't do better than 20k. Do you get extra points if you do multiple combos when the tiles get near the top of the screen?

When the stack is raised all the way up to the point that tiles start bouncing, I believe you get extra "stop" time for any chains and combos (you hear the voice shout "STOP!"). The main reason for raising the stack is to have more pieces to work with for longer chains. There is some kind of glitch where you don't get as many points as you should for "?x" chains (14x and over). I believe that any matches you make during a chain will have the same point multiplier as if they were part of the chain.

I don't really pay any attention to that. I just go for chains instead of 4+ combos. You generally get way more points that way.

You arent playing it wrong. He just has that rainman level of mastery of the game. I can usually make 2 combo moves but he can do horizontal combos 4-5 moves ahead. Hes like the tetris attacks version of a frame perfect zallard run in a punchout game.

I'm never good at setting up huge combos/chains in puzzle games. I'm horrible at Dr. Mario, for instance.

At least with Tetris most of the challenge comes from being able to maintain your stack and burn lines when necessary, as well as developing the muscle memory to quickly place pieces. It's still challenging, but at least it doesn't involve setting up huge combos.

The secret for Tetris Attack is that you don't set them up in advance. You *make* them happen by arranging things after the chain is in motion. If you made a match and all it would take to have a chain is a star on top instead of a diamond, then hurry up and put a star there before the diamond falls! If you succeed and make a match with the stars then find the next possible match while that match is still processing.

You usually only have to work one step ahead and look for the next easiest match that can be made by moving a piece or two.

You don't have much time before your last match blows up and the pieces fall, so precise inputs are still required. If you don't use an original SNES controller then you will frequently find your cursor in the wrong place after a series of precise inputs. Not even the SNES ASCII Pad will work properly. You will be cursing if you try to get good without a real SNES controller or a keyboard (emulators).

Here's a quick score on Tetris Attack. I much prefer this to original Tetris.
