Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests : Xevious!
With no further introduction, here are the rules for this week :
 

• 1 player only
• Play until Game Over
• Take your picture on the Title Screen
• Highest score wins
• Participation score : 30,000
• GENRE: Shoot ‘Em Up

 
The contest ends Sunday, 3/8/15 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, slow motion functions, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

I remember playing this game nonstop last year trying to beat it. I have since forgotten the locations of the hidden 1 ups though. I will be trying to get back into the swing of things this week.

I was practicing yesterday and my top two scores were 118,200 and 114,650. That 137,100 was my first run. Was thinking that I wouldn't do crap. Was actually doing pretty meh. Was on my last life somewhere around 75k before I got another at 120k. The 149,200 score was my very next run. Interesting to note,the game ramps up the difficulty the better you do,so if you actually avoid shooting the flying enemies,the difficulty won't ramp up as fast.

I did this at first,but now I just blast everything. I think it did help my dodging skills though.

If anybody out there is a shump maniac...

The current world record for NTSC Xevious (on NES) was set back in 2010 - and has not been topped since.

That score is 236,490. It was set by Mark A. Stacy.

Anybody out there have the skill to take this down this week?

For some reason I thought the game this week was Gradius. Oops!

I'll give it a shot. That score seems awfully low for a world record. Of course the scoring in this game is the pinball equivalent of Gorgar. (Hopes someone has played Gorgar.)

I agree that record seems very low.  It looks like a case of just nobody really bothering to compete on it.

Or maybe that's the score for one pass before the game loops and then stopping, but that would be weird.

I agree. I had never played it the slate of games were announced and I tried it a couple of times and moved on. Yesterday was the first time I really sat down and played it and I got 50% of the world record which says something about the record.

I think even Bach would enjoy the music in this game.
