I spent a lot of time on ebay over the weekend. Found two listings that gave me a heart attack, both false alarms:

Casper - "both versions"
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Casper-N...

Bad photography makes this look like a black cart in the thumbnail-- this happens a lot actually

@splain,

unless i am missing your point , that Casper listing DOES show 2 different carts.

the "Natsume" textbox in the middle is purple on the left cart, and blue on the other one...

I don't think these are variations, but differences in printing.  After collecting a TON of GB duplicates (as well as other games) and placing them side-by-side, I often find that there are color variations in labels, usually for the darker colors like black or dark blue, especially when you have two carts manufactured in two separate facilities (identified by having different two-digit stamps on the front of the cart.)  This just means that the labels that were printed for these games were printed at different times, or the printing facility had two printers creating the labels.

So how do we define a variant?  (And I can't believe I seriously asked that question.)  To me, a label variant is any label that was intentionally changed.  Whether they increased the revision number or not, if the label has been obviously modified, it's a variant.  Variations in printing due to printing process doesn't count.  Sure, you could have multiple samples to prove that label stickers look different, but that's not something you can catalog as variant because, at a microscopic label, no two labels are alike-- they are all variants.

My rule of intentional change also covers errors.  Again, I reference Bill and Ted with the borked LJN logo.  They made a significant print run of those and then someone noticed and fixed it.  Regardless, it was an intentional change that had to be done in design.  There's also DuckTales  Most of us own a "DMT" cart, which is a mispelling of "DMG".  There's also a "DMG" variant which fixed this issue, but didn't increase the revision number.

Of course, there's also the impressed stamp.  It's a bit further than I've taken organizing my document but there are also different facility and, of course ROM identifiers.  Personally, I don't think we should count differing facility codes for each game.  I mean, if someone wants to take my spreadsheet and expand it and add found facility codes for carts, as well as ROM versions, be my guest.  I am interested in having each variant in my collection and when it's all said and done, I might try to hunt down and be sure I have every ROM variant as well.  I think that could be a legitimate identifier for various variants, but I don't know if I'd want to pair that with specific label revisions AND ROM revisions.  That's getting to be to crazy for me, personally.

When we get that far off in the weeds, I think someone could spend a lot of time simply researching single games, hunting down 20-30 copies of the same item and comparing them all.  Be my guest if you are up for the challenge but IMHO, the point of this exercise is to find the common label variations, not accounting for common (but not error-specific) differences in manufacturing.

Picked up an Electro Brain Revenge of the Gator and a Payer's choice Dangerous Chase yesterday. They also had a Chinese CHN Chase HQ for $5. I probably should have got that.

Penguin Wars has a rev-1. I saw this one on ebay. I can't see any obvious visual differences, I'll look harder when it arrives.

If anyone's interested, here's a CIB copy of the first version of Animaniacs.

Condition is just barely below my preference and I'd rather not try to move the box and manual. Anyway, this version with the big Konami logo isn't easy to find and is the best condition copy I've seen yet.

Yeah, I managed to get one of those shortly after the obscure “rated-e”s were listed.  I keep checking from time to time, but I’ve not seen many Rated-E SML 1&2s.  I still can’t help but wonder if there’s an ad in a magazine or an article in Nintendo Power that announced the re-release of these titles.  There might be more than just SML 1&2 and Dr. Mario but I think that’s all I’m aware of.  Personally I’m surprised there’s not a Baseball or Alleyway.  There is a Tennis but it seems pretty common.

If anyone is looking for the Rated-E (Rev-2) Super Mario Land 2, here's one in terrible condition. This is quite difficult to find. I considered setting on this myself but it's just to ugly for my taste.

Still, if you need it to complete you set, it counts.

Lol, my bar is pretty low for sadness about condition vs. happiness at having the variant. I might try for this one if it stays cheap.

I actually won that rev-2 Dr. Mario auction, but it hasn't arrived yet.

And it turns out the difference between the Penguin Wars revision is the 2-player emblem. rev-0 says GAME BOY video link game pak on 3 lines, rev-1 says GAME LINK game pak on 2 lines. I wonder what the impetus was for incrementing the revision number just for that. A letter from Nintendo?

I'm guessing if you change the image you (or maybe Nintendo) updates the revision.

Then I wonder if it was someone at Nintendo who said "hmm, nope, it needs to say Game Link, not Game Boy Video Link. Ughhh, now I need to look at all my games to see if any others say video link, for evidence of more revisions.

You might catch one or two that way, but I doubt there’s many.

The seller's rep is pretty spotty. They have a history of not shipping or cancelling orders. Did you follow up with them?

Tracking updates have been days apart, but it says it arrived in my town today. Might turn out ok. But the listing doesn't explicitly say that the item pictured is the item I'll receive, so I'm ready for it to be a browned and torn common release.

When in doubt, AAF—Always Ask, First.  I contact sellers probably 20% of the time before buying because I want to be aure the item pictured isn’t a stock photo or that they will ship the item in a way I’d prefer.  Hope it works out, though.  Who would want to use a photo of a trashed cart, though, if it’s not the cart they are selling.

I just added Penguin Wars to the spreadsheet. Sorry it took a while. It slipped through the cracks.

Also, can anyone verify that the there is a correct Bill and Ted's cartridge? I've been searching a while and I've not found one again with a non-white error LJN logo that wasn't a PAL cart. There is a chance that when I was creating this list and making my own list that I was looking at a correct PAL cart. In other words, their may not be a corresponding, corrected Rev-0 Bill & Ted's Excellent GB Adventure. But, before I strike it off the list, I want to be sure that none of you guys that are paying attention have found a correct US copy.

EDIT

One more thing.  A long while ago (shortly after I made the original post) Dane gave me rights to modify the database of games.  I apologize, but I've yet to update any of these games.  If any of you guys participating in this list add any of these variants to the NA database, please let me know.  On our spreadsheet, I have a field that is "Is this in the NA database".  I'd like to update that field when these variants are added.

Mostly they pop up in Europe, so likely they got the adjusted label version over there later in the production and all the US copies are whited out....

Ok, thanks.  I skimmed the original postings.  I know some of my images have disappeared from when I closed my Imgur account.  I just missed this.  Thanks.

Welp, I was the only bidder on the Mario Land 2 cart, so at least I get a checkmark for that one. But obviously I'm going to keep looking.

And Dr. Mario came through, in 10/10 condition. So that was a lucky break.

Bill and Ted though. And a handful of others. One single picture on the internet is all I've seen of them. It will take a long time to complete this set.

Castlevania Adventure rev-1. I'll verify it when it arrives. The list will never be complete.
