SMB2 came out in the context of Zelda II and Castlevania II, all sequels different from the original.

Later stagnation of the series shouldn't be held against the innovations of the first sequels.

Peach's floating makes some of the platforming way easier.

The correct opinion is mario is the worst. Luigi can access secret stuff and skip sections with that bozo jump.

Peach is the beginner character. Makes thd game 10x easier with the hover.

Toad is my favorite and is the choice of people who like to play with precision without peachs float because it feels like cheating. Toad fast digs so even he makes certain sections easier though

Mario is the character no one plays as. And sucks.

Ranking order of greatness

Toad
Peach
Luigi
Mario

It's hard to judge what can be considered an unpopular opinion because there's always gonna be at least a few people who share the same opinion as you, statistically. However, I guess I'll still share some opinions of mine that could be considered uncommon.
I think Prince of Persia is terrible. Almost every comment I've seen about the game praises it as a groundbreaking classic. Personally, I think the game controls like ass and the animation is the only thing worth giving a damn about. Also, I don't know if you can call this an unpopular opinion, but Mario 1 is my favorite of the original trilogy. Even though 2 and 3 are technically better and have more content, Mario 1 is just the most replayable to me. The amount of tricks you can pull off coupled with the fact that you don't have to sink too much time into it makes it the Mario game that I come back to the most. I could probably think of a bunch of other unpopular opinions, but I'm too lazy to do that right now.

I wonder if people back during SMB2's production could've ever imagined that Luigi's high jumping (in both J's SMB-LL and SMB2 as the US knows it) would remain his signature feature to this day.

I don't think you quite understand Prince of Persia. It's not meant to be a Mario-type platformer. I'd actually call it more of a realism platformer, where quite literally you're an average guy trying to climb up and down scaffoldings and traverse dungeons. It's a game that isn't for everyone, but it's by no means terrible. It's very much a classic of its day.

Yup. And those that don’t like PoP are likely missing out on other greats of the cinematic platformer genre like Out of this World and Blackthorne...

I enjoyed and completed Out of this World for SNES. I could never get into Prince of Persia.

The extreme cinematic nature of OOTW made it really engaging.

I've only made it some or the way through the original Metroid. It was ok. I've no desire to play any of the rest of the series. As a general rule the SNES sucks.

You're crazy. I always played as Toad as a kid but now as an adult I realize that peach (while feels cheap) kicks some serious ass.

I’ve never been able to play any Metroid game for longer than five minutes. I’ve tried to play the original multiple times because of the clout it totes. I do not enjoy non linear 2d.

You should give Super Metroid a chance. The mapping and save points make it far more forgiving and easier to navigate than the original.

I don't usually care for non-linear 2D either, btw.

Mario is best all around and has the tightest control. Toad is fastest and strongest so he picks up the most coins and digs the best. His jumping lacks but there are no impassable areas as Toad.

Luigi's jumps the highest but he's too damn floaty. He's also weak and slow. Peach is the slowest and weakest. The only thing she's got going is the levitation jump which absolutely is cheap. I use her to cheese my way through 5-1 every time.

Prince of Persia and the like are great concepts, but I have a hard time sitting down to play them for some reason. I've only beaten Flashback on Genesis and PoP on NES. I plan to try Out of this World soon though.

I can only stand using Princess in SMB2 when her float jumps can be used as shortcuts. Otherwise she's just too darn slow.

Here's a new one: Dragon warrior 3 class changes are overrated. It's just an excuse to make people grind more levels. I just beat the game just fine without doing this. Party was pretty generic (Lv 41, fighter, cleric, mage).

Same. Super Metroid is likely one of my favourite games and I can't really think of another non-linear 2D game I even like. For example, I've tried to play SoTN so many times and just can't get into it.

I have tried super Metroid and didn’t seem to care for it either, although I have only attempted to play it once.

I have tried to play blaster master numerous times because of the clout it totes as well and can’t get more than five minutes in before I’m done.

i think the original TLOZ is the only non linear 2d game I can think of that I enjoy. I think it’s because of the top down perspective versus the side scrolling view. The top down view just makes more sense to me for a non linear 2d experience.
