Bring the Jubilee. Found it in a thrift store Saturday and started reading when we got home. So far, so good.

Bring the Jubilee ended up being pretty good. For alternate history I found it to be better written and more engaging than Dick's The Man in the High Castle. Trying to read The Man Who Was Thursday now, but it is off to a dry start.

I just finished The Mysterious Island, it was quite good. The first part was a little slow with all the story setup, but it payed off well for the later half of the book. Highly recommended.

I’m glad you enjoyed it! Are you working on more Verne or moving onto something else?

Think I will do a shorter book first, most likely Treasure Island. Then either The Story of King Arthur and His Knights or another Verne book.

I read Lancelyn Green's King Arthur and it was by far the driest of his retellings (most of the others are great!). Pyle's seemed even duller. And then there is White's Once and Future King. I gave up on Arthur stories after that.

I have read the Once and Future King before, and it was pretty dry. If Plye's version is that bad, I will just read something else.

Hmm... I know Pyle’s is considered a classic, but I haven’t read it yet. Still sitting on my shelf. Bummer to hear it’s dry. Will have to see whenever I finally get to it.

Admittedly I didn't make it very far in, maybe it picks up? If any of you take the plunge let me know. I want to like Arthur, I really do, but outside of Steinbeck's translation I have never enjoyed any of the versions of retellings.

Funny, Once and Future King was another one of the books I had almost purchased instead of The Forever War.

And I forgot, I also have Neuromancer on the way. Lots of catch up to play.

I also started Deadeye Dick to read alongside ACoK.  It's been a few years since I read a Vonnegut.

I read that one back in college, and then reread it a couple of years ago when I discovered it was part of a trilogy. Made the mistake of reading them in backwards order, due to the looseness of the trilogy.

Finished Deadeye Dick, started Galapagos

I think I'd rank the KV books I've read as...

Slaughterhouse Five
Sirens of Titan
Cat's Cradle
Mother Night
Welcome to the Monkey House
Breakfast of Champions
Deadeye Dick
Slapstick
While Mortals Sleep
Wampetters, Foma and Granfalloons

I'm still plugging away at The Dream of the Red Chamber/The Story of the Stone. I'm in the 4th of 5 volumes, so I'm getting near the end. Still really enjoying it.

I've also been listening to a lot of audiobooks on my commute.
Scaramouche (highly recommend)
The Prestige (recommend)
Captain Blood (highly recommend)
The Sea Hawk (you're not missing much)
The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax (fun listen--retired widow decides to join the CIA, but not exactly high literature)
Slaughterhouse-Five (current listen, never read it before)

As I posted above, I'm only just listening to Slaughterhouse-Five now. I'm finding it difficult to follow. I'm going to stick with it, but it's not been the most enjoyable experience thus far. I'm curious to hear what you like about it so much.

Interesting.  I guess I could see that because of the whole "unstuck in time" thing.  So once you wrap your head around the 4-5 major time periods of his life that you're experiencing, out of order, it should get easier.

I’m still early on in the book. He’s in the middle of experiencing being unstuck in time for the first time. I guess I’m just not used to being warped to and fro yet. I don’t see the purpose.

I seem to have trouble starting multiple books and finishing them over a 1-2year period, even though I religiously stick with video games until they are finished.  It's a problem.
I read Catch 22 in high school.  My dad was a huge MASH fan so I was intrigued at the connections there.  Curious to hear your thoughts on it sometime as I, on the whole, did enjoy the book.
