There are rumors that commander keen was going to be ported on the NES. Was there a prototype? Or was this game never made, just planned?

Well, the makers of commander keen made a fully working SMB3 engine for the PC but Nintendo backed out at the last minute. I wouldn't be surprised if there was talk about putting Commander Keen on the NES.

I love the CK series and a few months ago was considering making it my first homebrew project. However the scrolling and overall complexity made me reconsider it. I might take a stab at it with a few more notches on my belt

I don't recall hearing about this when I read The Masters of Doom (the story about the id Software guys, Carmack and Romero), and I sort of doubt it since they devoted all of their super limited resources to the SMB3 port. But, who knows...

It was pretty good. There were better games at the time, though.

commander keen was an amazing game. i never heard anything about it on the nes though, but that would be awesome! i just played it on the pc probably within the last year or so

This would be a pretty sweet game to have on the NES. I'd assume the graphics chip in the NES can handle Keen?

Fine, you've convinced me One day you MAY see some progress into this. The only thing I would be concerned with is all the color in Keen games. Other than that, I can't think of any reason off-hand why it couldn't be done. One question remains... how do you enable GOD mode with only a controller!

Also, I was thinking about how many pepsi cans/pizza/candy/teddy bears there are in the games. That would require a lot of memory to remember which ones have been picked up. I guess it would be comparable to SMB3 block levels though.
