I'm surprised I never played that one, since it is a genre I really enjoy.

Looks like the very crude beginnings of the Advance War series.

And once I watched your video, it bears a lot less resemblance to Godzilla 2 than I initially expected.

Advance Wars started on Famicom as Famicom Wars.  I thought that game might have been a predecessor to Desert Commander, but it actually came out four months later.

I assumed Godzilla 2 was pretty similar to this.  It will be interesting to see how it compares when I get to playing it several years from now.   
 

The combat screen for Godzilla 2 has a little more going on than in this game or Advance Wars, to where the combat may be slightly more complex.

Didn't realize that there was a Famicom Wars.  Again, another one that would be interesting to try and play -- I am assuming there must be a decent translation for that game?

I'm surprised you rated the "your difficulty" on this one at 7/10, in line with the generic difficulty rating.

It is definitely one that "gets easier" if you grew up playing it.



I certainly never beat it as a kid -- only had it as a rental a few times -- but I had an early feel for the play control that stuck with me as an adult.

Also I owned an repeatedly beat Lester the Unlikely on the SNES that has a similarly punishing play control style -  so I'm sure that helped me when I beat Prince of Persia as an adult.


Great game -- definitely one of my all time favorites.

 

Typically the ratings are the same if it's a game I haven't played before.

I know I wouldn't have had the patience to figure this out as a kid.  It still took a little bit to figure out as an adult who doesn't normally play games like this.
 

I remember spending a lot of time re-reading the coverage in Nintendo Power for the GB version of the game (the first 3 levels of the game are fairly similar, though not identical).

I'm sure you can imagine how the cramped screen of the gameboy would have to alter the game...


But there was just something about the NES version that turned it into a repeat rental for me.

Got around to reading your latest entry. Thats a very solid review of Q*Bert!

I was wondering if you'd keep to the 10/10 rating in difficulty since you did beat it faster than anticipated. Its still the only NES game I did put my full efforts in beating, and for a while I was seeking out challenging NES games, but couldn't. I think the 10/10 is deserved, although I'm sure Ikari Warriors (without the ABBA code) is a lot harder.

I had no clue there was a sequel to Q*Bert. It doesn't look very fun to be honest.
