they may be the same board but the CPLD is basically acting as a programmable mapper so the code in it might be different.

Agreed.  Your theory is sound. I'd love to test it the other way around with a Nes to Fami adapter, but those things are expensive!

Looks like our carts use the same boards.  Here are the ones from mine.

I wonder if your Ebay seller originally got the cart from the same Aliexpress seller: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/group/Games-for-N-E-S/63334...

They seem to be a pretty big seller, and pop up right away if you do a search for these particular games on aliexpress.

I think I might open up my FFVII cart and see what it looks like. That game actually works fine for me, but not for you?

No luck at all. Just tried it with the b7 firmware, and it appears to have regressed back to how it was before b6.  It erased my save.  Popped it back in my NES, and got to see that delightful train pulling into the station.

@avlon this is the nes to fami adapter I use ($18.99 shipped) - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adaptor-C...

I got it to use with my AV famicom originally, it works really well. It's not terribly expensive, $6 shipping is loads better than $40!

You can do a simple mod to give it perfect compatibility with mmc5 and expansion audio. But I don't know that you will get a different result in this case using the famicom port on the AVS. So if you will get more use than just testing this one thing, it will definitely be worth it.

Interesting, my FFVII cart, which works fine? Its a Famicom cart with a converter.

Yes see your FF7 is the original chinese pirate mapper COB and not a CPLD acting as a mapper. This is what I was talking about when I said there was more than 4 different revisions of these games.

One other differrence. Avlon's FFVII cart doesnt have a resistor on it like my pkemon one across some of the chip pins.

That's a diode on the rear of your cart and it's across some of the pins on what I believe is the SRAM (save RAM). It's a bodge but not really a functional difference.

Well at least now we know that the original pirate clone boards work, and its these "new"? boards that dont? Or at least dont save.... And with the new B7 Firmware, the graphics are corrupted.

This is the aliexpress store I bought my ff7 cart from - famicom to nes adapter variant. https://www.aliexpress.com/store/...

They also have a Pokemon yellow that uses the famicom board. I just don't like the label art. I'd rather have the art from the link Avlon posted. But I am not willing to pull the trigger without any confirmation.

The one he posted is mine basically. Exact same label art. So odds are it wouldnt work with the AVS currently.

I'm really tempted to buy the Nes to Fami adapter to see if it makes a difference. The only thing stopping me is that I won't have much use for it outside of just that test. I guess that I could use it as a workaround for some of the "green stripe games" until the fixed boards are released, but just the thought of a tower of power approaching the heights of a Genesis/32X/Sonic & Knuckles scares the bejesus out of me!

So question, do the famicom and nes have any "firmware" differences, or are the pretty much identical?

On the AVS? They're identical.

Yes.

Well... when saving a game, no, when shutting off the system? Yes.

No. The rom size is too large to run off the Everdrive. Same thing with FF7, Legend of Link, Megaman 4: Minus Infinity, and a handful of other hacks.

Yeah all the graphics work fine for Pokemon and there's nothing out of the ordinary with the game besides not being able to save. it also wipes out my memory from the NES save I did.

Yeah Yellow is a fun game, but got tired of fighting Brock for the third time already.

I had a bad copy of PinBot once. Didn't try to fix it. Just swapped for another at the shop where it was purchased.
