If you press select on the Title Screen, it will take you to the options of 1 player A or B and 2 player.  However, if you just start the game from the Title Screen, it will automatically select mode A.

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

No biggie.  It happens to the best of us.  I just wanted to make sure you didn't go out and buy a new cart.

Played for about an hour and a half last night, and man, I am not good at this game at all. I would really hate to get bounced in the first round, haha. I am hoping for my sake that the game hasn't "clicked" yet and I'll start rattling off good scores by the end of the week, but right now it's not looking too great for me.

For reference, in playing just for practice without the Tier 1 restriction, my best is shy of 80K.

I definitely find this one WAY harder than Balloon Fight, just given the differences in how momentum works (despite the surface-similarities between the two games).

Unlike Balloon Fight, this game rewards a near-death fighting style executed at high momentum with extra points, whereas Balloon Fight rewarded successive relatively safe low-momentum strikes.

I think I am losing at least 95% of my lives due to trying to get those egg bonuses when I should focus on safe death-from-above fighting, and make up points based on survival rather than finesse.

Great analysis.  I'd say for these reasons that getting pretty good at Balloon Fight has been a detriment to me playing Joust.

The main problem with safe play is that it's a slower style that the game makes up for with the pterodactyl.  The bounciness from collisions and the slipperyness of the physics make it difficult to play more swiftly.  Even though there is a scoring tradeoff between the two styles I believe quicker playing is the key to a good score.  It's just a matter of getting more comfortable playing that way.

My one positive so far is that I'm really good at the Egg Waves.  But I'm sure everyone else is too!

Yeah, unlike Balloon Fight where I suspect noticeable score differential came from mastering the bonus rounds, the Egg Waves are pretty easy to just turbo-on-through.

Tier 3 score of 95500

IMHO this game is brutal. bit it in wave 16, also lost a fair amount of eggs due to caution and letting them hit lava.

I really hate the Pterodactyl's.

Well... I wish I had a score to update but... this game is kinda kicking my ass right now (that's what I get for talking smack!). I've been able to crack 200k maybe twice but that was while playing all the way through to game over. I'm not positive but I think the furthest wave I've made it too was #24. The true strategy of this game has eluded me to this point, that's for sure.

Yeah, I had to watch the tutorial prior to the start of the game to even find out that you are invincible for a few seconds right after you die as long as you don't move. It saved me a ton of respawn deaths though...

I don't know... I think we may understand the "true strategy", and the truth  may simply be that it is an extremely difficult game given how momentum appears to work versus something like Balloon Fight.

Might just be that there is no additional "strategizing" your way out of the level of difficulty.

Yeah, you could be right. But I just have the feeling that there has to be alot more strategy to killing the blue guys at the very least... whether it involves certain positioning with the ledges or what not...

I haven't gotten far enough to run into them "in the wild" yet, but if I manufacture them early for points then getting set up for "death from above" is pretty straightforward.

It is all about forcing them to come up a level when you are standing on the ledge.

Obviously on levels with no top-cover that doesn't work, at all.

I will say, though, I think a HUGE factor in the difficulty difference between this and Balloon Fight is that in Joust even the weakest enemies have at least comparable maximum maneuvering capabilities, meaning you are genuinely out-matched by the white and blue guys.

No "fair fights" in this game. It is all about cunning.

SO CLOSE TO 180K!!!

Seriously, I almost got an extra life. If I did, I could have gone to the 200K mark. Sucks that you don't have this last life since I can get to 200K with all the lives.
I'll play some more of it after work tomorrow. Right now, I probably said the worst possible things to my game. I even crossed the red line where I started calling the game "Kim Kardashian". Jeez I need to chill out. F this...

<smacktalk>Also, you now have a new reason to update your score, BriGuy. I'm not scared of you. 1000 points makes all the difference, man <smacktalk\>

Tier 1 - 171,500 - Wave 22

Okay, after some breakthroughs last night I'm finally getting the hang of this game now.  =)

Not that thrilled with this being a 3rd place score though, haha.
