The Saints I think will be very interesting this year. Their offense will surely be better with Peyton coming back - but their defense is still dismal. One thing's for sure, the Falcons will not have a free pass to the playoffs this year like they did last.
their defense isnt as dismal as you think. sure, they were the worst in history last year (in yards allowed), but that was a team without its head coach and a terrible defensive coordinator who was forcing talent to play a scheme they didnt fit, instead of scheming to their strengths. they also managed to shut a team out last year, even though they gave up a lot of yards.
look at the Defensive rankings that Gregg Williams pulled off while he was D-coordinator (not amazing, but not terrible) and the record the team had those years (13-3 with a superbowl win, 11-5 and made the playoffs, and 13-3 and won their division). all they really need is a defense on that level (basically, not abysmal) and they will take the division again. Rob Ryan might be a bit overrated (i didnt want him) but he is already more loved by the players than Spags was, and is very similar to Gregg Williams as far as fire and gutsy scheming. plus, he runs a 3-4 that will play to many of the current roster's strengths.
im as excited for this season as i was for the 2009 season. offense will be firing on all cylinders again, and we have a fiery new D-coordinator to catch teams off guard for the first half of the year. by the time they figure out his defense, itll be too late.
the broncos are gonna be naaaaaaaasty though. glad we dont play them (until the superbowl
I agree with you Ray about the circumstances surrounding the Saints D last year contirbuting to their laughable performance (Spags' scheme DID NOT fit the personel, Peyton is the General in New Oreleans - they sorely missed him), but Coach Peyton will have some new challanges to look over with Slob ...er I mean Rob Ryan within their division this year.
1. The Buccaneers - The Bucs new offense is the prototypical 1960s "get 3 yards every play" type of scheme (with modern wrinkles of course.) I'm sure Coach Peyton was watching tapes like a fiend every single day to quell his football thirst, but the Bucs are like the "Negative World Saints" in that the Saints will score you out of the building - and the Bucs will keep your offense on the sidlines the whole game. If the Saints want the Bucs to go away, their Defense needs to stop the Bucs Rugby Offense. They should, but it'll leave them banged up for a week or two. Doesn't help that Greg Shiano has brought a rather dirty and nasty mentality to the crimson pirates.
2. The Falcons - The Dirty Birds have got to be emotionally devastated after running the table tw oconsecutive regualr seasons only to get bounced from the playoffs each year. Their offense is explosive like New Orleans, and I'd argue their defense is 1 step ahead at this point. The loss of Robert Meachem to the Chargers last year also brought down the Saints' offense a notch as well. Talent wise I see these 2 teams as about equal, but with Coach Peyton back and the mental toughness edge in the Saints favor, I see New Orleans sweeping the Falcons in their division games this year.
...Side note: is it just me, or does Mike Smith look constipated all the time?
3. The Panthers - Yes, they are still a real football team, but they are a real football team in need of some serious soul searching. Depending on which Cam Newton shows up to the game they are either a mild threat or a leauge joke. Once the rest of the NFL figured out Cam can only read half of a defense he had a tough time. Defense is still half too old and half too young and even though they have 3 RBs on their team that could all potentially start elsewhere, none of them seems to be able to get into a rythum. The Saints should get 2 wins from these guys as well this year.
That being said, I think the Saints have a very good chance of winning their division this year (pending injuries of course... I'm talking to you Darren Sproles) but if/when they reach the playoffs I question their toughness when facing brawling teams like San Fransico, Seattle, or even New York.
I like the black and gold. They are an easy team to root for. And I'll be looking fo the Gold Mastyer Chief in the stands week 1.
