Nice job, I think I died on 16. Hand was too gnarled at that point and shit just kept crashing into me

I think I was going on pure adrenaline at that point.  But now yeah, gonna have to wait a little bit before another replay.

I know for me personally, I finished my run after 1am last night and had a work thing at 8:15.   I wasn't leaving it on all day either since I'm way too paranoid to leave something like that;  I'm afraid the power will flicker, or my wife or the babysitter will turn it off.

Also, I like to keep momentum going.  After a break I'd probably just die instantly trying to get back into a groove

Thanks Doug!  Now if Bert would update the score thread before someone crushes us that would be most appreciated!

Given his skills when it comes to shooters, I'd actually be worried about Bert being the one doing the crushing!

Evidently you can get killed from the explosion after defeating a boss ... ?

I seemed to have pretty good luck leveling up my special weapon to 3 so I can have spread lasers and a bit of auto-fire when charging a shot, then pouring the rest into special weapon timer upgrades. Spread fire helps finding more secret items too!

My strategy for the Mission 3 boss was to hide out in the corner to better dodge his spread shot, then sweep to the middle to let off a charge shot, then go hide in the other corner to dodge, rinse and repeat. I got 81% doing it that way.

I feel comfortable relaying whatever strategies I've found since I won't be a factor on the leaderboards by the end of the week.

No one is catching him on the leaderboard so I'm basically ignoring his entries at this point

I beat him last year, so it can be done. Then again, I used to compete against Tom (rdrunner) back when he was a regular participant and there's no better training than that.

Twarwick, thanks for hooking me up w/1943.

Hey there is my cart

Glad to see it made it in one piece.

Funny story behind me getting that cart.. I was with my daughter at a softball tournament in maryland last summer and when we got to the hotel to get ready to go out to dinner i realize i packed jeans but no belt. so i ask the desk lady where a local store would be and there was a walmart a few miles away. when i get to the plaza i see a Marshalls and decide to go look in there for a belt instead of walmart. right next door was a electronics buy and sell shop so i decide to peek in and they had a nice little retro section. they had 1942 and 1943 and i couldnt remember which one i already had so i decided to leave and think about it.  I went to dinner and after the games the next day i went to check out Back to Media which was only like 15 minutes from where I was staying and got to meet parpunk and buy some games from his store. on the way back i stopped back at the buy and sell shop and picked up 1943 and a copy of my little pony on GBA for my younger daughter. i get home and it turns out i picked the wrong cart , i had 1943 and needed 1942. i had it backwards. and to top it off i already had the pony game for my daughter as well. so the extra stop netted me 2 dupes. I tried to trade for a copy of 1942 but never got any replies. but i am happy to see it found a good home with you. that copy is actually a little nicer than the one i kept for myself.

Great scores guys. I got to play last night. We'll see if I can break a million.
Ya, Bert is just waiting to post a huge score. It's probably on pause.

x3  In fact I was probably on stage 4 or 5 for a run when it happened and it just took the drive right outta me.  Had to shut it off and come back to it some hours later otherwise there might've been some NES controller carnage.

I got one more run in (and a small score update), but I couldn't break the million point mark. My 938k would've been good enough for 5th place in the 2012 contest, so it will be interesting to see how it compares this time.

I found this old post from JD from the 2012 contest thread encouraging me to post a score on the last day that I thought I'd share. I wasn't able to get one in by the deadline, so I wanted a chance to make up for it this time. I hope I knocked it out of the park for you buddy!

I just got 811,000. At least that's currently good enough for 4th. I'm just happy to finally crack the top 8 for the time being, even if I wind up placing 9th. But hopefully I'll make the top 8.

Man, I made it to stage 9 and then blew it. Gawd.

Man, I don't know how some of you who picked up this game for the first time this week got such great scores. This is one I had since childhood and haven't done as good.

Now I know how the Justice League feels when Superman challenges everyone to an arm wrestling contest.

For me, it was mostly trial and error with what worked best regarding the upgrade points. Upgrading the offense and weapon timer early followed with defense and energy timer gave me the best results. I didn't touch the weapon upgrade column at all.

I've been wondering whether it's worth upgrading the weapon. I like the bullet-shielding ability of the special weapon that you start out with.
