I actually didn't know that since I hadn't ever tried it, but I guess now there's no reason to since it would fall under point racking.

Yup.

Still means there are extra points to be had on the bosses by using cyclone kicks instead of uppercuts and knees, though.

Yeah. There are thousands of extra points to be had if you can get the hang of beating the bosses with just cyclone kicks.

I really hate the person who decided that this would be the last game. Beat'em Ups are my least favorite type of game and I suck at them

Boo!  This is an awesome game to end on.

Even beating the game iterates relatively quickly, and all the moves count for different points-per-enemy so there should be some decent score variety for similar progress levels.

Wow, extra-impressed with those 130k and 150k scores... I just worked one through to the end using what I thought was mostly uppercuts (since they are easier to score hits with than spin kicks) and I only had something like 90k by the clone-boss.

Definitely need some spin-kick practice.

I get the impression it is going to involve milking ladders and platform-switches to put the enemies in positions, since otherwise they kneel REALLY consistently.

If you try to spin kick them from flat ground they will kneel most of the time. If you are in an area where you can't move up or down, try jumping towards them first and then doing a spin kick as soon as you land. A lot of times the first jump will trick them into walking right into it.

I'll have to give that a try later tonight.

Just like learning to beat Double Dragon 1 with only headbutts, this is really a new way to play, for me (since I LOVE doing the hair-grab/throw move in this game and use to play hurling guys over ledges, almost exclusively)

Here's a score for you guys to aim for.  This is my best ever Double Dragon 2 score, which is good enough for 2nd place on Twin Galaxies.

-------------------------

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

That's because it's the only reason why you don't have the TG record.

That was actually a really sloppy run for me. I died in a couple of really stupid spots.

So based on some quick math (assuming the "game mechanics" guide is accurate on hit-points and damage):

The clone/shadow has 8.375 HP.

9 cyclones @ 4500 pts
7 uppercuts @ 3500 pts
5 knees @ 2500 pts

The shadow master has 16 HP

16 cyclones @ 8000 pts
13 uppercuts @ 6500 pts
9 knees @ 4500 pts

Basically the "end-game" is worth a maximum of 12,500 maximum, assuming you don't accidently land a punch here and there.

So that means the other available 145k, or so, is dispersed throughout the rest of the game.

Just something to consider when pacing your runs.

PS - CLAYB1RD - played this one much since the 2013 contest?
No info on arnpoly or BriGuy's experience on this one, unfortunately

Normally, I have a little over 100k at the end of the mansion level if that helps narrow it down. The last time I played and just missed the TG record, I estimated a "max score" without point racking to be in the 162k-163k range based on points that I left on the table. I need to start writing this stuff down so I can get the actual number.

Nope, haven't touched it since then, so I'm pretty rusty at the moment haha hopefully I can get the feel for things sooner than later since I'll have a busy week ahead of me

I had 157k with six more hits left on the Shadow Master on my last life which would have given me 160k (and broke the TG record) and he knocked me down in the corner and every time I started to get up he went into his spin punch until I was dead. I was SO close!!

Do I get bonus points for beating it blindfolded and with one arm tied behind my back?

I always thought he was supposed to be McBain from The Simpsons. They look identical.

In the process of working up a proper scoring table.
Might have it done later today, depending on how many game-breaks I take.

I'm only considering consistent usage of the 3 special moves (and then highlighting which enemies don't matter on how you kill them).

For Level 1, for instance:
25000 possible points (assuming all cyclone kicks)
drops to 17500 if you use all uppercuts
drops to 14000 if you use all knees

BUT, Ropers and Lindas score identically, whether you spin kick or use uppercuts.

And the boss is worth a full 1000 pts less from uppercuts rather than spin kicks.

Extrapolating these early results over the course of the game, I definitely need to brush up on my spin kick abilities...

I think I already mentioned that this was virtually a new game for me.

I'm just trying to beat the game normally without considering the 1-life aspect.  I played a bunch last night and got as far as Level 7.  I made it to Stage 5 on one life though.  I jumped into the water, oops!
