Earlier today I mentioned this game over in the GVN post to let Hoagie know that it needs to be added to the list.  Instead of junking up his thread with a discussion, I figured I'd restart the conversation over here.

Anyway, this morning Metal Jesus on YouTube posted a video about this game and how/why it's a PS4 game and currently going for over $500 on eBay.  Feel free to watch the video, or read my bullet point TL;DR below.





The General Scoop:
- A company called Limited "Rare" Games (not Limited "Run" Games) approached the makers of DLC game called Poop Slinger to see if they wanted to make a physical copy.  The company agreed.
- LRG' was given the rights to make the game.
- Sony requires a minimum print run of 1000 games for a title to be licensed, so LRG' initiated the process.
- I crap you not, on April 1, 2018 they release on Twitter a link to where you can pre-order the game.
- Apparantly it went viral on twitter because everyone thought it was fake.
- Fast forward and the the few "morons" that bought this game actually ended up getting them in the mail.
- LRG' only sold 80ish titles and they went under because the game didn't sell.  This was either their only title, or they were to new to not take such a loss.
- Fast forward to today and the ones that were bought back in April were the only ones sold and distributed, making it the most narrow, licensed release of any game (that I'm aware of.)
- Copies on the bay are going for north of $500, but who knows where the other 920 copies went and there are certainly some in the hands of the developers and former LRG' employees.

Not sure about that, but I do think due to the oddity of the story it will be sought after.  It’s one thin that it’s super rare, but it’s also a but taboo, it out the company under and releasing a PR statement for your one and only game on April 1st has to be one of the dumbest marketing and advertising moves of all time.  They call all of that “provenance” and this game oozes it.

The irony is real. It reminds me of the box of shit that Cards Against Humanity sold for Black Friday to show that people would buy anything.

I always appreciated their stunts.  I have no idea why but being bored af Christmas and wanting some background noise, I left open the video feed of them digging their completely pointless hole a couple of years ago. I didn’t throw any money in that hole, but it was a good “shaking my head, and I can’t believe what people will waste their money on” moment.

That’s kind of a funny thought.  I wonder how much it costs to get a game licensed by Sony with a strict, 1,000 print run.

I may need to get a kickstarter going for “the dumbest licensend title ever” you boot it up and it’s just a page that says “Congratations!!! You bought this game!”

I do feel like it was a legit April Fool's joke by Limited RUN Games. Like, look at the Limited Rare logo. I mean yeah, granted, a one-off rip-off could potentially have happened, sure, but it WAS done on April Fool's. SURELY any company that legit printed 1000 copies of a game (as is required by Sony) would make SOME attempt to sell the rest of the copies of the game, especially if they were going to go bankrupt. You don't just sit on 900 copies of a game.

Poteeeentially, and this would be shady AF - maybe some dick made a shit company to sell a shit game and take advantage of the whole limited collectible market, and hoped to walk away with a pile of them so they could sell em on ebay for a huge uptick knowing that manufactured rarity is a thing. Maybe this is all one big social experiment and you all got pranked, bro, it's just a prank bro.

Just spitballing but if the cost to print a low-count game is $25/ea, that's $25,000 plus all the work to pull it off.  If you can slowly get $500 each, you'd have to sell 50 to make your money back... then put the rest (saying "found in a warehouse") up for sale at $200 each on a bulk sale listing on ebay and you'd make a fair chunk of change.  Quite the long game but... well it would be The Producers in video game form, for sure!

Interesting that the Limited Rare Games HQ is just a short 2 hour drive away from the Limited Run Games HQ. The former being in SC, and the latter in NC.

And now the 3-4 copies I saw on eBay for 600+ are all gone, except for one at $11,000+.

I figured that would happen though I still think it’s overpriced.  Of course, if the real LRG was behind this and this was there form of a double-prank for April Fools day, maybe the legit sent these out and then destroyed the remaining 900+ games.  Not entirely impossible.  In that case, I really do have a tough time putting a value on this game 84 games is very rare but the story is one to go down in infamey.  No one can pull this off again, really, and people not start to think the rest are copycats trying to milk the market and likely hiding copies for future sale and profit.

I don't think they're destroyed, they're just in a storage unit somewhere. This is going to be a holy grail for PS4 for a long time, though.
