Even more discouraging are some of the comments.......

This doesn't surprise me sadly. What gets me is most of these idiots are only slightly younger than me (39) and were raised by the same parents as the kids I graduated with.

I started a thread here
http://nintendoage.com/forum/mess...

that I request be re-opened. I understand that this thread is on the same topic, but come on, a thread titled "This is pretty discouraging" vs "Never Forget" - but Americans are Forgetting (Holocaust receding from memory)" obviously say different things.
I think this topic is important enough that it should get more attention. In the least, this thread needs to be renamed because I certainly would not know what the topic of this thread was about and could easily overlook it.

Can you post what the content is? At least a quick overview or something? Click bait thread titles that are just links to news on some random site with no semblance of an idea going into it, and you keep posting these threads.

And then you put just a click bait comment that again doesn't even attempt to say what's at the link.

You won't BELIEVE the comments an the thread! #7 is truly depressing!

Did I accidentally sign up to Buzzfeed?

No kidding!

Articles like this are dumb. They only surveyed 1,350 people, and somehow they are supposed to represent, "accurately", the percentages of what the other millions and millions of people in the country know and don't know?

All right - the article is about millenials (and to a certain extent the populace at large) and their knowledge (or lack there of ) of relatively modern history in regards to Nazi depradations.

The thrust of the topic is not really meant to be solely about the holocaust (although the article is) but more focused on the lack of knowledge about history (and other things) in general - which I did actually describe accurately in the title - the article could have been about any number of topics - I have seen some pretty scary ones of a similar ilk regarding geography

Can someone point me to a link I have ever provided that is at all inappropriate? (Some people have gone so far as to say they find my threads interesting - but I realize their appeal may often be somewhat rarified for one reason or another.)

This thread was started first. Even though the click bait title sucks, we don’t need two posts about how stupid and culturally  insensitive “millennials” are.

What does this have to do with intelligence?

As far as Millenials, or even younger, is The Holocaust part of regular curriculum? Are people being taught about this and are they being done so in a way that imports the gravity of what they're being told?

The age range for millennials seems too big. 18 to 34 would have some very different life experience. Being a year old for 9/11 vs 17 for instance.

Not worried about the rest of the poll. Small sample makes me wonder if they were trying to poll to support a headline, not report results.

Please feel free to change the title if it really floats your boat.

Just because someone doesn't know something (that used to be considered basic knowledge) doesn't make them stupid or culturally insensitive* - it likely means that the education system at pretty much all levels is dramatically failing.**

*That term is pretty loaded in and of itself.

**Even at the higher levels - President Obama (who had the benefit of having a much more pretigious (and higher) education than I did) made some really outrageous (in terms of accuracy) statements regarding Islam and slavery in the U.S.  Stuff that I learned in junior high at a school in the sticks.

Actually that is a fairly typical sample size - maybe even a bit larger than political surveys often are.

This link  which describes sample size in political polling* (among other things) might be informative. Or not if it is really only "shit bait."

http://www.pollingreport.com/ncpp...

More importantly perhaps is who exactly they surveyed - if high school washouts were over represented it is one thing - but if college graduates were over represented it is quite another (and even scarier IMHO).

*I just pulled this at random - but I remember from my statisics and poli sci courses that sample sizes are generally pretty small - the art in constructing them properly is to accurately sample which ever components of the larger populace you are trying to find out about.

The point of the results are not about millenials, stupidity nor insensitivity, but about simply the lack of education regarding the Holocaust.
Could we perhaps at least change the title if it's okay with the original poster (which apparently it is)?

As a middle school history teacher, I talk about the Holocaust with my 6th grade students. I have to be a bit careful, since it's a pretty difficult topic to discuss, especially with 12-year-olds, but it's something I cover scrupulously.

Its your title, feel free to change it if you would like. I’m not going to change any members title unless its something graphic or breaks the rules.   I agree that its sad that they don’t actually know because of the  public school systems (if thats the case) my  comment about millenials being stupid was a play on the fact that the overwhelming majority of articles about millenials are negative (i guess the quotes around “millenials” didnt convey that as I imagined they would)

either way, we dont need 2 threads.

And for the record, we read the diary of anne frank in 8th grade (public CA school) and it was a super serious subject, my english teacher cried and I will never forget. That was in 1995 though.

It probably doesn't surprise you that the role of the Soviet Union in WWII is (usually) vastly underplayed in most US people's understanding of the war.  (From what I have read of Soviet depictions of that history the importance of US aid is underplayed - for example most of the steel used to produce the justifiably famous T-34 came from the U.S. (among other things)) - I don't think the U.S. could have succeeded without the Soviet Union doing the bulk of the fighting in the European Theater - nor do I think the Soviet Union could have persisted without the massive U.S. aid sent to her.

Its really sad I was born in 91 so im smack in the middle of their demographic and i don't understand how they dont know what it is. Every history class from 6th to 10th grade focused on WWII and the holocaust. In fact ive said in the past that our history classes taught TOO MUCH about WWII and hardly anything about the founding of our country or the 1800's other than the civil war. They taught us 0 beyond(newer than WWII). Try asking anyone my age about Vietnam and see the blank looks you get

Polls are garbage. You know when you go to the mall and there are people with clipboards looking around? They are conducting polls. If you don't get asked it is because they are looking for a certain type of person. They are schooled on who to ask to make there polls work in the way they want it. They do this so technically they aren't fabricating the poll answers and can prove people actually took it. It is a dirty tactic but hey at least they aren't making crap up.

Example you don't ask a Bubba Fudd type person if they are against banning firearms, or a Senior Citizen if they are against medicare.

All your titles are click baity dude. Almost  Every single one in this sub forum. I may not care for them, but we don’t really have a rule for it and a good amount of your linked articles are interesting (yes i click on every single one people post just to make sure they arent sketchy) I figured the title things were just a unique thing you like doing, which is harmless.
