oh rizz you should come to iminlikewithyou.com and play tetris (they call it blockles) with thor and i.  my name is "number3" there and theres an icon drago from rocky IV.  the play there is so fast at the top level that a 4 million game seriously seems like childs play.  check it out.

Here are those articles:

Article #2:

http://www.retrojunk.com/details_articles/2129/

I will have to check out the blockles game, but I guarantee playing tetris with a keyboard won't be quite as pretty (at least till I get the hang of it).  I've tried some sort of online tetris a long time ago, but I quickly retreated to the comfort of my NES controllers, hehe.

i wonder if you could use those adapters that sell along side the NWC. The keyboard, once you get used to it actaully makes it easier to vibrate pieces. i gotta warn you man.... if you get into a match with one of the top 5-10 players (seagulls, lameguest, quicksand, menochthecat, arkain) youre in for a humbling introduction. id be lucky if i was in the top 20, and im playing at a speed probably comparable to level 24 - 26 in NES tetris. thor plays faster than level 29 (not sure if youve seen that speed on youtube, but the jump from 28 to 29 is as dramatic as 18 to 19)
the good news is a week later you are playing faster than you ever thought you could. good times.
thanks for links, ill read em tonight.

What rule set does Blockles use? Do the pieces lock down instantly (like NES Tetris), or are they "slippery" like Tetris DX and later?

With pieces that lock down, I don't think I've ever really played past LVL 19 on the NES (though I can lock down a pretty substantial score by that time). But with "slippery" blocks I can play until I get bored with it, at any speed.

Ya, I was gonna say the same. Tetris DS, for instance, pretty much has no limit to the high score other then your fingers cramping up at some point.

Yup. I need to get a new Advantage joystick :/ so I can get my side-to-side speed up at the later levels. Playing tetris with a joystick would be a bit of an adjustment, but I know that having a stick will improve the ability to execute quick, discrete, taps as opposed to the "mushiness" of the NES controller.

I briefly tried out blockles. Wow, it will definitely take some getting used to for me (you don't need to sign up to give it a quick try). I might get a moment to try it more tonight. I don't think the blockle blocks were slippery, but I only gave it a 5 minute run.

A 3 mil NWC score is extremely respectable. Remember early on in the contest when 1 million was getting attention?

Out of curiosity, how many times did you guys play the NWC to get that score?

EDIT to add:
I just tried Blockles.  It does use "slippery" block physics.  I might try it out a little more this weekend with my tankstick.  I can remap that joystick to any keyboard layout I want.  I can't imagine that it won't provide a tremendous advantage over keyboard players

Unfortunately, playing a version like Blockles gets you used to the slippery blocks and really gets you rusty at REAL Tetris

Looks like I began playing it on 7/8 and scored big on 8/23. On the nights I did play (maybe 3-4 days out of the week), it was probably a 3 hour stretch. Early on, I'd play through the games even when I messed up in SMB or crashed in Rad Racer, but later I'd always be hitting reset if I made a mistake in them.

Wow...OK, so quite a bit of training then. Now I don't feel so bad I've probably played my copy 20 times, and made about 1.5M in that time.

^^ yeah i played the NWC for hours and hours and days and days to achive that score... my problem was i could only memorize the tetris pattern to like level 7 or 8 if i remember correctly.. so after lvl 7 or 8 i had to wing it every time. those guys probablly had the pattern memorized much further ???not sure??? ... and just like them once i mastered SMB and RR i would just reset it every time i messed up on those games..

so i have nearly beaten 18 several more times, it just wont give me the straight pieces when i need them.. its getting really frustrating.. i am determened though and will keep trying.

oh and i tried our blockles too, it will take some getting use to... its a fun game and i like the fact that you play head to head online...

Jeremy - it will be pure luck if nes king or I beat him at LVL 18, since it will come down to (a) being dealt a game that CAN be won and (b) slamming down enough pieces to beat the score.

It would be a shitload of luck and even more skill to do the same at LVL 19 and truly dominate the competition

I really doubt I'll get level 15 beat, let alone 18! Anyone gonna do 19? I think it is possible, but I'll still be very impressed.
