Street Fighter II - 883,800
Street Fighter has always been one of my personal favorite fighting game franchises and SFII on the SNES in particular has a long and storied history with me. That said, having become more accustomed to the other games in the series and having not seriously played the original SFII in quite a while, I was surprised by how difficult it can be initially. Once you get into a groove and remember the patterns of each opponent, it gets much easier but there are still certain opponents that are just frustrating. When the computer is feeling fiendish, it can turn Blanka into an absolute asshole who can recover mid-air and perform an instant, unblockable Rolling Attack before you reach the ground. Dhalsim can be a real pain, mostly because his reach is so extreme and some of his attacks so quick that you barely have a safe place to stand. Then, of course, there are those times when an opponent's grab maneuver out-prioritizes one of your specials and goes on and on, draining almost half your health. And Vega. Oh, yes. Vega. Still, once I was able to get back into it, I really enjoyed myself. Of the original series, I think Super Street Fighter II is still my favorite entry but, as I've said, the original game both in arcades and on the SNES have specific connection to my past and carry a lot of nostalgia for me.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts - Stage 2
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, on the other hand, reminded me of how much I want to love it for it's atmosphere...but also how much I hate it for it's game play. For whatever reason, I've never been very good at either game in the series. Something about the random monster spawns, the 2-hit deaths, knock-back (which can turn 2-hit deaths into 1-hit deaths), stiff jumping, limited weapon arcs. Yeah, I don't think I've ever gotten past Stage 3 in Super GnG and that was typically after a half dozen continues. Trying to make significant progress on one continue in this game was just the most unpleasant, frustrating thing I've experienced in gaming in a while. The distance the game sets you back when you die is just morale-crushing, too. You can spend 5 minutes trying to carefully dodge 30 obstacles, then get knocked off your raft and be sent back to do it all over again. Just the worst feeling.
