Also, I'm always comfortable rocking 2 speed ugprades in these games (any more and I feel like I'm out of control). I think you probably want max speed for that part

I had fun with this game so I might actually give some real effort towards placing this week. I'd like to at least clear 2 loops, which is probably do-able if I have time for an attempt or three each night

If I recall correctly, I tended to run through the game with 4 speed upgrades, and during that end run, it's a really tight balance between over-controlling-and-crashing, and not being able to make it into position in time.

I don't think I've played this since the 2013 tournament finals, so I'm probably too rusty to even put up a decent score since my gaming time is pretty limited anymore. I'll just sit back and watch the experts battle it out.

I gotta put some effort out there at least! It's a fun game but not one I'm so familiar with that I can get through it easily. I remember having a bit of trouble getting through the game the last time we played it but if it was a 1-life contest then that would explain why!

Not sure whether I want to bother anymore with Life Force or start practicing Double Dragon 2.

I don't think I've ever beaten Double Dragon 2, but last year's contest I beat Double Dragon for the first time. I know that DD2 has some tricky platforming near the end that worries me a little.

Go take a look at the thread from the time DD2 was the contest final game.

Then decide whether you have better odds of being in the top 3 for Life Force, or the top 3 for Double Dragon 2...
(though you guys are playing with some interesting and out-there rules this season, so who knows what is going to happen to mix it up on DD2...    )

I've played Double Dragon II one time ever, and lost all my lives to that platforming. I have never died once to the platforming in Double Dragon

The DD2 platforming is clunky, but it is very consistent... at least it the game never ruins your day with the infamous "piston wall".

With this group of players getting a top 3 in any game is going to be rough. My 171k score in Marble Madness wasn't even good enough for top 8.

Marble Madness was insane. I honestly felt really bad your score wasn't higher on the board, that was nuts.

Ha!  Yeah, fair enough!

Let me rephrase -- personally, I think "mastering" the platforming of DD2 is the "easy part" of doing well in that game.
It was NOT what separates the pros from the amateurs, from what I recall.

Just pause it and take a break after each loop if you don't want to play the whole shebang.

If I can loop the game I'll probably have to do this.  Or stay up super late!

You'll be able to loop it, with no problem.

Making it through the first loop without dying isn't particularly bad, at all.
(only the escape sequence at the end is risky/tricky, IMO)

I gather the later loops ramp up pretty quickly, but the first loop was a breeze when we had a 1-life contest a couple years ago.

I watched a playthrough of Life Force and the escape sequence at the end reminds me of Battletoads. It looks like you'll definitely lose some lives there until you have it memorized. But you'll probably have a bunch of lives by that point anyway.

When you get to the end sequence, you can just stay at the top of the screen. The first 10 or so bars that come at you you'll have to be to the left/right a bit, but everything after those you can sit in the middle and never get hit at all.

Plus side: even if you die once or twice on this section, just go to the middle at the top of the screen and you'll lose 2, MAYBE 3 lives, and make it to the next loop. Loops start over with your weapons etc. all back to zero anyway, so aside from maybe a few lives lost, no harm done!

On the final gate area right after you kill Zelos's,line your ship up between the first and second digits of your score then move to the top of the screen. Count the gates as they appear and before the 10th gate appears, move right just a tad, then as soon as you pass it tap back over to the original position. If done correctly, you won't get touched.

Super easy.

I seriously considered making a comeback this year, but I just haven't had nearly the free time since I retired after the 2015 season. These new players are good enough that they don't need any motivation from me to put up awesome scores, although it is really cool to see the mix of contest veterans and first time players this season!

Marble Madness was ridiculous.
I can't believe 170K wasn't enough for top 8.

As for Double Dragon II, spin kick everyone and their mother if you want a high score.

If I still had the time to give a 100% effort each week I'd probably at least consider it, but I just don't have the free time that I used to. I did ask her if she wanted to play and I even offered to help coach her, so she might make an appearance sometime in the future.

To quote Shawn Michaels' retirement speech "As much as I appreciate the one more match chants, I'll do everything in my power to make sure that doesn't happen". I had my time in the spotlight and you new guys are doing an awesome job of carrying on the high level of competition that I used to do my best to bring to the contests each week.

To be fair, I am playing now far from 100% effort but I'm still at it, so that's no excuse!

There are a few weeks this year where I do plan on showing off what I can really do.

It will be an honour to have her play along side us.
With Miss Clawful gone from NA, we only got ookii_risu and me to represent the ladies here, and I am barely qualify as lady-like.
She would surely help a lot to even the ratio a bit more.

I wish Miss Clawful had at least left her Youtube channel up. She posted videos in the contests that I wouldn't mind seeing now.
