This is a weird one I know, but as the topic says, I want to be able to taste nothing temporarily.  I have a feeling I'll be expected to eat some stuff I won't like and rather than risk vomiting due to bad taste, I want to just make it go away.

I'm going to be in Japan.  Yeah, I know a lot of you will say:  "Hey, just try the stuff."  but there's a big problem.  If I don't like it and try to force myself to eat it, I'll vomit probably after 2 or 3 swallows (yes, this WILL happen) and that's even worse than just being insulting and saying "I don't like this, I won't eat it."

I'm trying to do what I consider to be respectful.

There is a particular berry I read about a couple of years back. It was appearantly popular in metro areas food parties. It wouldn't make you not have taste but it was make foods taste different. Instead of being sour Lemons would be sweet. That kind of stuff that might help. Something that helped me overcome the same fears was eating in a controlled environment. I'd get the questionable food bring it home and go for it, where nobody was there to see me in my shame.

Actually right in Japan I've seen and heard where the poisonous Japaneese Blowfish actually still has enough toxins just in the "safe" part to eat that completely will numb out your mouth like novacain. I don't know how much of the taste goes with that but it might be something to look into.

As long as you avoid the crazy stuff like the fermented/rotten tofu you should be fine.

It's all just fish, rice, noodles, and seaweed.

Go down to your local Asian grocer and pick up a few things to try out ahead of time.

A whole trip to Japan is a long time to kill your taste with cigars, and it might be long enough to get addicted, which would be really retarded.

Liquid Lidocaine.

It will completely numb the lining of the mouth and throat for up to an hour. It would probably be rather dangerous while eating however as you would not feel yourself bite through your own tounge.

I know walgreens and other drug stores have over the counter products that will numb your mouth. I remember my friend had a packet of these cough drop things, gave me one, and we sounded retarded trying to talk. If communicating isnt an issue, this could be a solution? lol

Dude, japanese food is the best. My father and I eat at a little hole in the wall japanese suchi bar/buffet every friday for lunch on our breaks. You are missing out. I def say just try the stuff. Or you can always try spraying your tounge with a shit ton of Chloraseptic..

get some ambesol (however its spelled) the stuff for cold and canker sores. It will completely numb your mouth and taste buds if you use enough of it. However you might dribble a little when you take a drink of water, like when you leave the dentist.

I'd really recommend against the numbing stuff.

If you actually use enough of that to not being able to taste your food, you will very likely either bite clean through your tongue, or bite a hole in your lip.

There is a good reason why the dentist tells you not to eat solid food until the numbness goes away after you've had any work done.

well if you never want to taste again for about 5 months go get the same ear surgery i did where they stretch your nerve in your ear that controls taste in the mouth.

Ice cubes. Eat a few like you would a mint before you eat, should numb your mouth for awhile.

Just pretend you're allergic to everything.

Or just go to a shitty dentist like I did about 8 weeks ago. When He was giving me the shot of novacaine (spell check), I felt an electrical shock through my mouth and jumped a bit. He then asked if I was ok and I said yes and we went along with the root canal. He aparently hit a nerve and I have lost feeling in the right side of my mouth pretty much. I also have trouble tasting tuff still.

On another note. Does anyone think I can take legal action towards this? I think I am going to start looking into it.
