Going forward the competition will have two games running at a time.  They are separate leaderboards, with their own points awarded.  You can compete in one or the other, or both.

This appears to trip people up so I'm posting it again:  If you post an updated score please re-use your original post, or create a new one and remove your old score.  That will make my life easier sorting things out.

September Game #1: Earthworm Jim
Rules
  • Goal -> Progress
  • Tiebreaker #1 -> Continues used
  • Tiebreaker #2 -> Lives on current continue used
  • Bonus Point > 1CC the game
  • Play on default difficulty
  • Anticipate when you are on your final continue and final life and get a picture before you reach the game over screen
  • If you complete the game, get a pic of the boss battle before it goes to the ending
September Game #2: Super Pinball
Rules

  • Goal -> High Score
  • Bonus Point -> Beat Conquest mode (score threshold on third table?)
  • Select Conquest mode
  • Get your pic of the score immediately after game over, you should have about 15-20 seconds
  • Take a picture of the score for each table you beat and sum the the score as your final score.
  • Highest final score wins.
  • High score doesn't seem to show at demo mode. Take your pictures immediately after beating the table or after game over.
  • TBD if you can see your high score after beating the game.  Get one beforehand as insurance

Earthworm Jim - Complete (0 continues used, 3 lives remaining)

I've always enjoyed Earthworm Jim. I used to rent it repeatedly in the mid-90's. Wonderful graphics and animation. Quirky sense of humor. Challenging stages full of secret areas and items. It can get a little frustrating at moments but never feels unfair. I've played the original much more frequently than the sequel but I've always enjoyed Part 2 as well. After finishing this one again, I'll have to revisit the rest of Tennapel's works. It's been ages since the last time I played Skullmonkeys.

Super Pinball - 172,918,270

Jolly Joker is the bane of my existence. That table is the worst combination of frustrating and tedious. The other two tables aren't nearly as constraining. Also, it's music sucks.

Earthworm Jim

Stage 7 (Stage 10 if we count all Andy Asteroids levels) (Level 5) 1st Checkpoint - 0 lives left, no continues used

Super Pinball - 182,766,100

Got a very late start on these this month (didn't start playing them until yesterday).  Never gave Earthworm Jim a serious playthrough until today and man is it a lot of fun.  I knew of it as a kid, but never played it and I wish I had back then.  Still playing it right now, though I doubt I will get much further before the contest ends.  Are we counting each Andy Asteroids stage as a separate level?  I only counted it once, and if I count each one, I guess that would make Level 5 stage 10?  At any rate, I've gotten quite far in the game while playing it this evening.

As for Super Pinball, it had pretty good ball physics, but multiball just sucks because it makes the game lag so much (well, not a lot, but enough to make it slightly inconvenient when both balls are near the flippers).  Came so close to getting to the Wizard table, but missed it by like 11 million points.  Well, I would have had to also shoot for Blackbeard's Treasure after opening the Forbidden Door, but still, I was close to activating it.  Wish I had played both games sooner this month, as I enjoyed them both.

-------------------------

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

Perhaps its because I've been spoiled by Naxat's Crush series of video pinball but Super Pinball is...excruciating. There are almost no table animations, sound variety or excitement to the game play. The tables also have some pretty frustrating layouts. You can get caught in certain situations where you swat at the ball for over a minute without any movement to your score. I suppose that's to contrast with those moments where you can suddenly wrack up 10+ Mil points with a few lucky shots.

The music for the Jolly Joker table feels like it's drilling a hole through my skull. The Blackbeard table's color schemes can sometimes make me lose track of the ball. My favorite board is probably Wizard, mostly because the music is inoffensive, the board design is pretty clean and I seem to be able to reach the bonuses a bit more reliably. That's not exactly high praise.

At least the ball physics are mostly decent. There are times when the ball does something nonsensical but it doesn't happen all that often. Still...ugh. This game is a real drain on my energy. Everytime the announcer asks, "You wanna try again?", I can't help but mutter "Not really", to myself.

So, a quick question about the contest rules for Super Pinball:

Since we're playing in Conquest mode, as far as I've been able to tell, once you've reached the threshold and unlocked the next table, you'll only actually reach the next table once you have played through all 3 balls. When the next table in sequence comes up, your score resets to zero and the new table tracks your progress toward the next score threshold, etc.

So, my question is: Are we combining high scores from all tables that we can reach into one overall score or are we supposed to take only the best score of the tables played?

Example: I score 75 Mil. on Jolly Joker when I lose ball 3. Game advances to Blackbeard. I score 80 Mil. on Blackbeard and lose ball 3. Game over. Is my contest score 155 Mil (75+80) or 80 Mil (highest of the two)?

Edit: Also, I want to make sure I'm not misunderstanding anything...are we required to play Conquest mode for any score submitted or is playing in Conquest mode just an optional requirement for players who want to get the bonus point? I realized that there was potential ambiguity to the wording of the bonus qualifier and didn't want to make any assumptions.

I made it up to the first checkpoint on the third level. I'm stuck as to what to do. I'm at the point where there is the large green jewel rotating on a platform and have no clue where to go from there. Any help would be appreciated. I'd rather not look up a video

Rules for Super Pinball have been amended.
Take a picture of the score of each table you beat and sum the scores for your final score. Highest sum wins.

Awesome. Thanks, Bea.

I've not yet made it to the 3rd table, so I have no idea if there is some kind of special way to "end" the game after reaching threshold. I could only guess that the game might go to ending after losing all your balls once you've hit that point.

Also, does anyone know what some of the bonuses actually do, like Million Pops, Million Drops, Trick or Treat, Kickback, etc.? I don't think I've ever once seen any score influence from the dozens of times I've got stuck with Million Drops and the game doesn't exactly give any hints for most of these.

I hate multi-ball in this game, as the slowdown really screws you up. In a game that has as big a focus on precision as pinball, you can't afford any lag. It's a real problem.

I don`t think there is a score threshold on the third table. I think the criteria for beating the table is getting to the Forbidden Door score.

Jolly Joker was 60,000,000
Blackbeard was 120,000,000
Wizard was 180,000,000

I missed the forbidden door on the Wizard table the first time at 180m but it redid the bonus at 200m. I don`t know if it is needed to get into the forbidden door to complete the level but I did hit it on every board of my attempts.

The Million Pops is the three circular bounce pads at the top of the level. That`s how I got that high score on Jolly Joker. I got the million pops bonus and hit the ball up to the bouncers. It went mad up there and I got an easy 120m - 150m in a couple seconds. Most of this game has been luck. I always seem to get Lite Mystery. I have no clue what that one does.

I'll add the level list to the OP for Earthworm Jim, because it could be confusing to track which Andy's Asteroids you're on

Updated my post with Super Pinball scores. That game just feels very heavily weighted on luck. I had one run on Jolly Joker that went really well (about 114M) but then Blackbeard crashed and burned really quickly (~23M).

Yeah, I know! I've forgotten to post my scores before. The one month format is great, but it definitely creates a challenge for me in posting    I've set a reminder for me to post them. I came SO CLOSE to your score, too!

Yeah, Earthworm is pretty easy for the most part. The bungee jumping level (Snot a Problem) is kind of a pain because if you miss hitting Major Mucus, you hit the wall and get hurt. Plus, the creature in the pool at the bottom can kill you in one hit, which he did to me once.

Super Pinball can be a total crapshoot at times. You can have these amazing runs and then some really lousy ones. It seemed like a lot of times I would lose the first ball after scoring 1 million points, and then rack up points like crazy on the second one. I was surprised at how decent the physics were on Super Pinball for it being a 16-bit game. A lot of pinball games from that era lack quite a bit in pinball realism, but I guess that is expected for 16-bit games.

I had time this month to play, I just kept putting the games off haha. Definitely don't want to do that in October because I love Zombies Ate My Neighbors. Street Fighter 2 Turbo...not so much haha.
