When being interviewed by Beau and Tim from Retrotainment Games on the most recent episode of The Assembly Line podcast, the question arose if I had any plan for a sequel for The Incident. I revealed that I did have some plans, originally, when the game was first released, and those plans were to take levels the community had built and sort of compile the best ones into a standalone release. I knew it was farfetched at the time, but it was sort of a fun passing thought.

Unfortunately, as a lot of you probably saw (or didn't see... which was the problem) hardly anyone submitted any levels. I think in the game's three year lifespan as of now, there have been less than 10 levels made, from what I can see anyway. Who knows why that is. But regardless, they suggested that I create a standalone level creation tool and release the ROM for free online and see what happens. So I've taken the time to do just that.

It's identical to the creation tool found in the retail version of the game, so codes created in that version will work in this one and vice versa. One change I made was that when you import a code and begin playing it, it will now choose a random song from the first 9 floors of the game instead of just the first floor's music over and over. Not a huge change, but it might alleviate some annoyance if a lot of people start submitting and you all want to try them out.

Regardless, this is a social experiment more than anything. I hope you'll download it and give it a try. Distribute it however you'd like, as much as you'd like. But if you create some levels, come here and post them! Or alternatively, you can post them on Twitter and tag me.

Thanks for everyone's interest.

I gave it a try. All my level design knowledge was necessary to produce this code, but I can't import it. I hope it is a due to a human error when typing the code :s

Works for me. Make sure you're using a lowercase x on row 4, lowercase c's on row 5, and a lowercase p on row 6. I should have used a more distiguishable font.

Thank you for building a level!

It's funny. The font in Metroid always used to bug me as a kid, with the weird looking different-colored lowercase letters, but looking back I'm certain that's exactly why they did it.

Just a few days ago I was thinking how awesome it would be to have this game on my phone so I could play a level here and there on car rides and then I discovered it's actually a remake of an older game called Sokoban which has already been ported to Android. Awesome!

Oh and I never created any levels because I suck at it. I'm not creative enough to come up with something that wouldn't be too easy nor impossible.

Not sure what is causing it, but when I push one of my blocks I get a corruption glitch and a really quick scrolling glitch which I managed to get a screenshot of.  Corrupts tile 0F. Also does some nametable/attribute corruption as well. This is the beta testing thread right

If you want to test it out, here was the code for this level. It happens when you push the top rightmost block (keep pushing it right into the wall). Happens in Fceux and Messen.  Messen seems to give worse corruption glitches for some reason.

Oh yes, that was the lowercase "x" on row 4 that I missed. It is hard to have completely distinguishable fonts, too many characters are basically the same "Oo0Q" or "Iil1" are infamous. And you cannot use mainly glyphs as they are hard to communicate with a keyboard =)

By the way, here is a second level. This one was interesting to design: I wanted to do a nightmare, with lots of barrels and one error made you stuck. Then I realized there was a 6 barrels limit. From refinement to refinement, it became this :

This is really weird! Thanks for pointing it out. I'll try to figure out what's going on.

edit: I have an idea of what I might be able to do to fix it, so I'll work on it tonight when I get to St. Augustine.

Alright, I fixed the bug and tweaked a couple other things. An updated zip file is available at the URL posted above.

And crap, Brad, this is a good level. I still haven't figured it out.

I think I'll call it "Think outside the box".

That's how I came up with all my level names.

This level reminds me of Mario 2 for some reason.

<3 Thank you so much for submitting! Was fun. I hope others are playing the levels too. Or are they waiting for the Incident 2 compilation?! Haha.
