I just reacquainted myself with an obscure title:

In the Hunt for PS1. It's got that Metal Slug graphic style but you're in a submarine. Great level design with stuff exploding everywhere around you and huge bosses.

Great title I'd recommend picking up. It also had a Sega Saturn release.

+1. It's an amazing title on the PS1.

Stay away from the Saturn version, though. It has a lot of slowdown, and the screen is about 30-40% smaller. It's downright awful on the Saturn, sadly.

Also, 1000th post! Woot!

In the Hunt on the Saturn is literally unplayable for me. I'm selling my copy next month.

Damn! All this hate for in the hunt on saturn! Glad I never picked it up!

Look up the cover art for those 2 games, it's hilarious!

Also GameCube imports:
Shikigami no Shiro II (also on PS2 in US)
Star Soldier
Radio Allergy (Radirgy)

You can use a free loader disc to boot imports, but some games (very few) will have text issues. For the most part it works perfectly. Check out the discussion we had in my thread recently HERE

Count me in the "love shooters but suck at them" club.

I've been acquiring most of the NES shooters and a few SNES ones.

Love SHMUPS. Seemed like the ones I played mainly required memorization.

Hell yeah, MRN shmup for the win! I need to check out the 2015 rom update.

I have tons and tons of shmups. Recently I've been playing the PC Engine as it is a treasure trove of shmup greatness.

I like In the Hunt Saturn style

Although everyone is right, it has some major performance issues.

I'm a huge fan of the Sega Saturn so naturally, i'm a fan of shmups!  I've still got a long way to go in my import saturn collection, with some nasties yet to go like Blast Wind and Hyper Duel, but i'm still quite happy with the ones i do have.  I'll try and post a picture of them later today.

In the meantime, i'd like to give a special shout out to Sexy Parodius on the saturn.  The parodius series is fantastic and for my money Sexy is the most fun.  I'd even go as far to say Sexy Parodius is better than any gradius game.  Its premise and humour is insane in the most wonderful way that only Japan could give us.  It always brings the laughs, but it just so happens to be a helluva good shooter too.  Thankfully it's also very reasonably priced.  Check this one out.

Sweet!! Thanks!!

Star Soldier won't work with a Freeloader on Gamecube, I had to mod my system.

And if you're a shmup fan at all, do yourself a favor and get a TurboGrafx or a PC-Engine.   You're missing out on a ton!

love this game, I own the PAL version and its really bad comapred to the ntsc-j
not sure of you lot across the pond but PAL only have 2 option satalites NTSC has 3 and looks much harder.

EDIT: ntsc looks the hardest as it only has 2 option sats (60hz is faster than my weak pal 50hz)

Definitely been wanting to get into Turbografx! Almost bid on a boxed PC Engine Duo RX that ended yesterday but I had spent so much recently on other stuff like a CIB Wild Guns it just didnt seem like a good idea. I will hopefully start a collection soon though!

I was surprised to find out War in the Gulf for the NES is not a terrible game, considering it was a Brazilian release. Could use some polish but is pretty solid. Dezaemon on the famicom looks pretty cool- it's a design your own shooter program. I've been trying to get it working on a NES cart but I'm having trouble with saving.

I was able to play Star Soldier on a US cube with freeloader, no modding needed. Maybe it has to do with the freeloader disc version.

The best shmups in my opinion are on the Saturn and genesis. Wings of WOR on the Genny is freaking epic and anything Thunder Force is excellent. The Sega CD had some real gems like Lords of Thunder. Saturn import shmups is where it's at. You really need to invest in a 4 in 1 action replay and get some of the imports. Hyper Duel, Battle Garrega, and Soukygarentai (I know I spelled that shit wrong) are crazy good. For a real treat, get mobile light force, it has some real misleading artwork but it's actually a version of Gunbird.
