If you have PowerPak and don't intend to ripp games what are the benefits of this other than that you can update the PKs boot rom?

If you aren't ripping or developing games, some uses are:

Backup and restoring save games - have a 20 year old Zelda saved game? Back it up to your computer before you replace the cart battery, then write the save back to the cart. You can also upload saved games from emulators back to the cart.

Fix GAR - Game Action Replays will stop working when the battery dies. With the USB CopyNES you can restore the GAR program after replacing the battery. Paperweight becomes valuable cart!

Flash carts - Besides the PowerPak, future carts will have a flash chip for updating. The game I am working on will be completely flashable so all the levels can be replaced. Games could also store levels in RAM like saved games for updating.

I bought the last remaining, it looks like... But yes, I will need some help with the whole installation process, as I've never used a soldering iron in my life :/ .

NGD,   check out that article by BootGod.  Pick up a cheap soldering iron (less than $10) and the de-soldering iron he mentioned ($15). Oh,  and some solder if none comes with the iron.  You can probably get them at Radio Shack (or whatever its called now)

Then take a beat up NES game you absolutely hate (did I mention I hate Top Gun)  and practice de-soldering all the chips on it.    If you cant get the solthose things der to come off for a pin, add new solder to it (this dilutes the old stuff)
By the time you are done removing the last chip you'll be an expert.   Then try soldering them back in.

The whole thing will likely only take a couple of hours (probably less) if you are new to it.

Edit- Oh yeah.  Be careful.  I burned myself the first few times and man that hurts.

I have a soldering iron and a soldering gun but I suck with them. I have tried in the past and I am like a retard on pixie sticks trying to do it.

Yes there will be more soon, I just carefully control how many are going out in case any problems appear. Someone else should start a mail in service for people to send systems for the upgrade, or buy a stack of systems and sell them with the board installed...

If my stack of NESs worked then I would do that, but I still haven't put mine together.

Hm... bunnyboy, that idea might work... If I got decent at soldering and desoldering, I might try buying a few boards, installing them into NES systems, and reselling them...I have about 6 or 7 spare NES systems lying around here. If nothing else, it'd turn an $18 system (that's what I normally sell the unrefurbished systems for, btw) into about, what, a $125-$150 system ($18 for the system, $10 for a new connector, $75ish for the board after shipping, plus a couple hours labor)?

Will it pretty much allows you to dump any and all of your games so you get the ROMs off of them. This is great to check for differences on roms between variants. Also good for proto dumping, Game Action Replay Repair and dev stuff. The main thing is ROM dumping really, at least for me.
