I just got 179,560. I'm edging a little closer to 180k. Again, this was with breaking the black marble and getting a stage two wand. I really wish I'd recorded this. But that would have made me more nervous as well.

I suspect that most players who are this good are speed runners who don't play for points. That's why it's unusual to see scores that are this high.

This took getting a second stage wand, breaking the black marble, and beating the ultimate race with 78 seconds left. I'm still shooting for 180k.

Neat!

Also, that sounds like it should be a quote from The Wizard, haha.

What would it take to push you beyond 180k?

The best would be getting another freaking wand and not choking on the ultimate race. That score was with just the second stage wand. Getting more wands when you're playing well is rare and when opportunities happen it's easy to choke under the pressure.

I've been getting back into MM after not playing for a few months. I did a little better than my previous PB.

Here's a 175k no wands run that I recorded a few months ago. My best scoring runs are like this, but I also get at least one wand, break the black marble and win with 78 seconds left.

I mean, I just barely broke 180k in this run. But it counts!

That was just getting a stage two wand and then having close to the best run that I could do. It would have been nice to get a 79 in the ultimate race but I've only done that once. 183K is definitely possible.

Have you tried Marble Madness on any of the other platforms (Sega Master or Sega Genesis)?

I also have the EA version on the Genesis that I've never played much. I've never liked it as much as the NES version. .There's another port on the Sega Genesis that's supposed to be better.

That's the Japanese-exclusive Tengen port -- far better than the EA version (which is playable but disappointing), and damn near arcade-perfect.

That and the NES release are really the only two MM console ports I've played that are any good. The Game Boy/Color/Advance releases are mind-blowingly poor -- it seemed nigh-impossible to beat the GBC version, which was straight-up broken. And the SMS/Game Gear releases just don't play right at all; the ball feels like it has no mass, IIRC.

What about the arcade one on Midway Arcade Origins for 360/XBone/PS3?

I don't really think of those emulation collections as ports, myself. I don't recall if I've played that collection, but if it's well-emulated and the control scheme is well-implemented I'm sure it's good, though I personally find Marble Madness easier to play with a D-pad than a trackball. (I beat the arcade game in MAME using a mouse, though.)
