Ok, had a pretty decent run on one life.

Picked up about 50 stars in World 1 (seems like there are only 60, or so, total), but only snagged 35 stars in World 2 (is there a bonus stage in W2?).

Died a stupid death by not using a springboard on the first pit of World 3

There is a bonus stage in World 2. I think it's between some fire pillars. I don't remember the exact location because I found it by accident while I was aimlessly jumping around the stage trying to avoid the hands the first time I got there.

Okay, I managed to do a little bit better today.  Still trying to memorize the layout of all those long jumps on the springs in world 3.

I had this game as a kid but I dont have it now. I use to get frustrated as hell when I played this years ago.

Here's a good attempt.

I'll try to do better, I just need to master level 3 & 4, and I don't think I'll have the time for level 5 and after.

Indeed, level 3 is a pain in the arse. I actually have way less problem passing level 4 with one life than level 3.

^^^ We keep up sometimes. There have been a few games where we easily clobbered the highest score.

The issue is getting it all on tape

Well, I was FINALLY able to make it to level 6-1 without dying. Twice actually. But the first time I missed one of the warp balloons :-\. At 6-1 I was doomed. I mean, I've beaten the level actually, but maybe 1 out of every 4 tries... and apparently neither of these were that try.

came so close to breaking 500k... but didn't

i didn't get any of the extra lives. i didn't see the point of wasting time to get them.

EDIT:
To get that score, here's what I did:

Get every power up that I could (each additional one is worth 500 points).
Go very slow through the fields to kill as many of those ball things and such as possible. Because time didn't add to score, I would cut every level pretty close.
On the bosses, you get points for each part that you kill, so I would kill each one down to the head and then kill the head.
Stars are worth a TON (like 1-2k after the level) so even if I missed a few, I would usually reset it and start over

don't you start with 3 lives? therefore shouldn't you have 2 left?

how do you avoid extra lives? i never read the manual on this one i just assumed you got them from points?

you start with two lives, and the only way to get extra lives is by picking up the heart containers.

i originially picked them up, put then died a few times with very close calls (ran out of time), so i tried to avoid them after that.
