Hey guys, I have been completely defeated by World 5-1 of this game.  I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to get past this part that has literally defeated me at least 100 times.  After you get past the wind, you run past some pipes and some turtles and you end up at a single block followed by a pit and then there is a staircase on the other side.  I can't reach the staircase no matter what I try!  It seems there are only 2 possible ways to get to the staircase.  1.  Run at full speed and jump right before the block to land on the stairs or 2.  Stand on the very edge of the block and try and run across the block and jump past the pit to land on the stairs.  Either way my Mario always ends up in the pit.  Are there any SMB 2 masters out there that could give me a tip on what to do?

Thanks alot!

Agent J

Yeah, I saw that. I'm about that good... Thanks though. I ended up taking a break, going back to it and just jumping off the block and it worked no problem, it wasn't even close! Now 6-4 is giving me headaches but mainly just because I get there with only one or two lives. I will not turn this sucker off 'til I beat it!

Yeah, I have a feeling I'm in trouble if I'm struggling this early in the game. I also thought that guy had some cheats on which is why I didn't know if his method worked or not. On the All-Stars version can you save your progress after you beat each level? That would make it alot easier.

Luigi definitely makes this game far easier as far as those wicked jumps are concerned. Even the "slippery" landings he has are negated if you're a good "head-on" player and just keep moving...also short hops on landing help to slow down as I remember...

Well, I finally gave up at 7-3. I'm sure I could have beaten that level with enough practice but I needed to take another long break and didn't feel like keeping my NES on for more than 12 consecutive hours. How long is too long for an NES to be on?

I think I'll try Luigi next time I play it...

8-2 or 8-3 is where I gave up as well. That game is brutal.
