First up, go buy an AVS:

http://www.retrousb.com/index.php...

Then, play games and submit score to NA from your AVS device (see AVS instructions for more info).

Finally, come here and discuss!

How will rules be enforced for any game? Is it an honor system?

The rules are play a game and get a high score, and also have fun.

And yes PowerPak and other flash carts work

System checks the ROM for hacks and cheats. It's not foolproof I'm sure, but it's all just for fun. Not meant to be used by Guinness.

Certainly you understand, in some games, it's not as simple as "get a high score"?

To clarify I understand powerpak/everdrive work w the avs my question was relative to the thread, as in, are they allowed.

For the purposes of what the Scoreboard does, I suspect it may have to be that simple, unless Bunnyboy has secondary detection for things like lost lives, etc.

I can't see any way that the device could support rules as complicated as what we sometimes use for the weekly contests.

(for flash carts - yes, they are allowed, because the device isn't checking the cart, per se, it is checking the ROM and ensuring that the ROM has not been tampered with, whether that is on an original cart or a flash cart is irrelevant)

So basically this scoreboard will be full of tied for first place perfect scores.

I didnt excpect any any detection on the avs part. Just thought there may be written rules.

What do you consider "full"?  More than 5 people with that score?  More than 10?

I'm sure there will be numerous people with "perfect scores" in games where it is possible.
But I think it's also just reality that MANY games, even with convoluted rules in place, don't lend themselves to "proving" a clear "best player".
Rather, many games will allow good players to validate their ability, with no real ability to distinguish within the highest tier of play.

For instance, Tetris, if you looked at score alone, you lose a lot of granularity in who is "best".
(though plenty argue that a game like Tetris only proves relative merit, at the highest level, during live play)

BUT, it may be possible that "max out" based games could be able to record WHEN the maxout occurred (so lowest level to the highest score becomes a distinguishing feature).

Or, in a game like Tetris, ultimate endurance in the form of lines could couple with score.

I don't know the technical limitations, I just have the impression that the more obtuse rulesets that we use for the contests (i.e. x-number-of-lives, no point-pressing, etc) are probably very hard to support in any automated way.

Pimp and csylve were streaming on twitch on the weekend as they played the AVS and score submissions. Looks great, but it's only a matter of time on some games where the leaderboard will be maxed out scores. I know it's intended for fun, but theres always someone that will grind it out for 8 hours to max a score.

Full as in every game will have perfect scores.

No doubt about the second point.

I think you might be overestimating the motivation of people to grind indefinitely, if you think it will represent any sort of problem.

(I mean, some games it's going to be pretty obvious that endurance-grinding was required to make those scores, so people "who know" will be able to recognzie "real" scores versus "grind" scores)

I didn't have the impression that the scoreboard involved any kind of finite-length ladder, though, so it's more about showing what YOU can do and sharing it "officially" rather than explicit competition for some games, I suspect.

That said, if some games supported alternate rules of "lowest score" upon completion (however completion would be detected), that would be genuinely interesting.

EDIT: or no-death scores, or timed scores, etc.

I wouldn't doubt that SOME kind of alternate rules are possible, just not at the intracacy of what we sometimes do in the contests.

I'm not doubting anyone's ability to grind.

*shrugs shoulders* maybe/hopefully all the scores will be legit

Once you insert a game, the AVS allows you to view top scores of NA users for the particular game that's in it. You just access the scoreboard feature from the menu. Doing this will also allow you to see if that particular game has been entered into the database yet. If it hasn't it will tell you and then you'll know you can't upload your high score yet. Ideally all games will eventually be added but it takes time of course

I hear that he's really tall, like really tall.

Edit: (since two of the nicest guys won't trash talk each other, they leave us little choice but to do it for them)
