I'd offer a side competition strictly for fun to see who can beat it first (I've never really played it), but my mother is staying in the guest room that houses the NES, so the amount of time I can give it is pretty up in the air ><

Eh. Didn't put in the work, so here's my final/lame update.

 



 

Dude. Wtf? How is this even possible? I get like 500 points every time I kill a guy. I use the barrel in level one, the box in level 2. Get the dynamite guys to blow them selves up and still by the time I enter the cave in at 23-25k .... I'm going to go practice legendary wings. 
 

I can actually do better if I get time. I probably would've knocked a few thousand more points off on my last try, but I got shot by Willy at the end and had to go through the entire boss rush all over again. There's obviously a method, but I don't want to give anything away.

 

Ugh, I just looped on the third level without realizing. I haven't played this game in forever, so I didn't remember that you have to go inside the holes where those big, Thing-looking mofos come out. Grr. So of course, my points were crazy, and I died fighting them a second time, ha.

Question: Does the mode matter?

Your natural instinct after completing a section is to keep going right, and this game severely punishes you for that. It happened to me in the cave.

good stuff bearcat. You know I'll keep trying till the end of the week on this one. 

Even if if I don't figure out the low score I'm gonna at least beat the game. 
 

Mode A is the regular game. Mode B is a 1 on 1 fighting game.

I'm hoping to finally get a score less than 20k by the end of the week (which is actually possible).
 

That's what I'm here for! The B mode is actually kinda fun with a second player. When I was a kid, I think we played that more than the regular game.

 

The rule against headbutting is because it is possible to exploit a glitch where you lose points via headbutting. But without such an exploit, I have no idea how bearcat's low score is possible.

I wonder which will be the big impasse this contest, stage 3 or the blocks. Stage 3 is tough.

For those struggling with getting a low score: remember, you want to get as far in the game as possible first. The lowest score takes precedence in the event of a tie. I recommend everyone work on beating the game first and then worry about finding ways to lower your score. Progress first, low score second.

I'm enjoying this. Nothing against "Pac-Man", but this is much more my kind of game. Now if only I could get to stage 4 with all my lives. I always lose a life to the two Abobos before the cave. It takes so many jump kicks to defeat them, and it's easy to get smacked if they duck and you miss.

Damn, I got 38k at the same spot in stage 4. I have to say I'm throwing a fit like a 5 year old seeing bearcat put up 25k finishing the game. 

I looked up the last low score contest and a video was posted but it is no longer up?!?!!! 

Tom v said he used 50 point punches and knocked enemy's down without uppercuts. I tried this and didn't make it past level 1! 

Im just gonna try to beat the game and hope for the best.
