That's the only way to get high scores on Bust a Move, is by dropping bubbles. Popped bubbles give next to no points, while dropped bubbles gives points based on a multiplier, up to 17, which doubles with each bubble dropped.
The goal for high scores in Bust a Move is to "drop" 17+ bubbles at a time, each time scoring 1.3m points. This is possible to do at least once per level in the game.
EDIT: I would personally suggest leaving the scoring as is. Anyone can learn how to do this in under an hour. I suuuuuucked at Bust a Move prior to last night. I never realized there was actual math behind it, and that each bubble doubled the points multiplier. If you change it to low score progression, I would argue that you'll make it even MORE boring, as to get a low score you'll want to play each level VERY slowly, even going so far as having to WAIT a bit before finishing each level, since you get a bonus based on speed at the end of each level.
I like the way the scoring works because it's a high risk/reward. On the one hand, you're trying to get 17+ bubble drops at once. On the other hand, doing so means having a huge amount of bubbles hanging on the screen, AND having to hit the bubbles at the TOP of the chain, which is not always so easy. I really like the strategy involved in getting a high score, so I'd argue that it's best to leave it as is.
It's only a few days into the month, and I have effectively shown everyone how you can get huge scores. I think that we'll see some really good scores now even from people who previously though these scores impossible.
