I had Chris Lincoln on my channel to talk about this new Castlevania Hack, as well as other projects he has been working on such as Pyronaut and Rollie.  Enjoy!

For those of us that don't care to watch videos online, can we get a quick-summary?

That's a quicker summary than I was asking for, thanks

Obviously, I was asking for more detail than a rehash of the thread title...

Chris had Rollie on display at PRGE last year. It was a very neat looking, all original platformer. Super nice guy too! I'll have to watch the video and learn how is coming when I have a chance. Thanks for posting John, for those of us that do not YouTube much.

Thank you for your kind words. I figure there were a few here that would enjoy the video. Chris is a very talented and cool guy. It was an informal video. I should have shown more captured footage, but thought it was neat to have the developer play his own game and talk.

Optomon, my favorite rom hacker   I'll be looking forward to these games.

Can't believe he's still playing on the Ouya. It almost makes me want to dig mine out, but I can't stand the controller.

I was happy to do this video with John. That's pretty much the first video of me online, so I was kind of nervous about it, but it looks like people are saying nice things about it on the channel so I have to be pleased with that.

The Ouya is John's btw, never saw one before then. The controller didn't bother me too much, except I kept stumbling when I tried finding out how start and select were configured.

Looking good Optomon, that music from the first stage sounds familiar. 😉

The challenge design on the castlevania levels you showcased looked great! Love the flowers and bouncing in rollie.

One thing i've thought before on making little backtracking loops like that (not just for this particular romhack - it's not meant to push a suggestion, but the showcase jogged my memory about a being in a similar situation) - to make the second loop-through different from the first, it may sometimes be a good idea to provide a modifier to the challenge or path so that it doesn't feels like a sisyphos hill. I think it doesn't matter as much if the challenge is easier or harder (one has the power to let the player through quicker, the other to engage the player in a new situation), just as long as it is somewhat different. Within castlevania constraints that might be another subweapon that is better suited to tackle those birds the second time or a multiplier tablet. Sometimes it's also possible to provide alternate routes using elevation as a unidirectional mechanism, though maybe not in the situation you showcased.
