They are by and large done on the honor system, and if you are a person who feels the need to lie to get a meaningless little badge on the bottom of your NA profile then you have some issues.
That's my take on it. They are badges meant to be fun on a website dedicated to video game collecting, which is also supposed to be fun. And yet more often than not, people somehow find a way to argue and dissect every little detail, and hate on each other or some aspect of the hobby to the point where it becomes silly.
Who cares about the number of a full set? Make a goal that makes you happy, and try to achieve it. Not to impress others or get validation in the hobby or for a shiny badge, but because it brings you joy and is fun. The NES full set list isn't a set in stone, end all be all list. It is just a list that a portion of the hobby agrees upon as being considered the full licensed list. It is a fun goal to set for yourself. Maybe someone is totally happy saying they have a full Nes Set minus SE, or consider it a full set even without SE . It isn't hurting me or the hobby.
Even if they are wrong, or you disagree with their list, who really cares at the end of the day lol?
And the complaints/"damages" in the OP are just downright silly.
Games get passed over because of popularity? - That isn't any fault but your own. Always try something out for yourself before you make an opinion and toss it aside as garbage.
Game values are hurt?- Well games shouldn't be considered an investment in the first place, as there are much better options for your money. Buying any big ticket item in this hobby you knowingly take the risk of losing value for a myriad of reasons. Like any other hobby.
The history?- Do you honestly think in the age of the internet, the history of this hobby and the information on its games are going to be lost because of what/how people classify their collections on an internet forum?
