I first gave it an honest chance for these contests last year, and then tried to go to the MAME version -- so much harder! A quarter-sucker for sure. I have the opposite experience with DK, though I've definitely played the actual cabinet a lot more than the NES port.
Yeah. The NES DKjr has a nice difficulty curve. The first loop is easy, and it gradually gets harder with subsequent loops. The arcade version is very difficult from the beginning because it's designed to kick your ass so you'll put in more quarters.
