Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests.  With just 3 weeks left until the first tournament of the year, points are going to become very important now and should make for some really exciting competition.  This week's game is gonna be a Black Box classic and stars the famous blue and pink jacket-wearing tag team from the Smash Bros. series.  That's right, this week it's Ice CIimber.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • Start on Mountain 1
  • Point racking is not allowed
  • Play until Game Over
  • Take your picture on the Title Screen
  • If you roll the score, take a picture right before you roll the score and right after
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Action/Platformer

The contest ends Sunday, 6/16/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

186,020 Finally broke 100k. Was hoping I could make it to 200k,but I bit it pretty early on mountain 10. This may be my last attempt, but we'll see. If we play this next season,I'll definitely be ready. Fun game. Reminds me of one of those classic early 80s arcade games. If the jump mechanics weren't so jacked up,this game would get a lot more praise that it does.

At this rate I'm going to be seeing pterodactyls in my sleep by the end of the week.

So farming is okay? I read that after a long enough time the polar bear comes and attacks you but he can be killed. Seems like you could just go for birds on the first mountain over and over (although I doubt it's the best strategy in the long run).

When you reach the 8th floor of a stage, the polar bear won't appear anymore.  It's possible to stay on a stage forever once you get this far.

This allows for quite a bit of farming, but there's a limit.  You can only kill 99 of each type of enemy (birds, icicles, bricks).  Anything above 99 won't count when you finish the level (I tested this with the bricks, but this probably applies to birds and icicles as well).

You can score points faster by just clearing levels at up to 70,000 per bonus stage, but I see how farming can be used to your advantage, since the game gets a lot faster once you clear a few stages.  On higher levels, the last jumps needed to clear a stage are often rather difficult to pull off, so it might be difficult to determine farming from "struggling".

Not sure how the rules should be.  I'll just let others take it from here.

Man, the controls in this game are difficult for me to get used to.

Can you kill the polar bear?

I added in a rule to make point racking forbidden just in case it is possible to farm endlessly for points.

Good idea. It's better to just go through stages.

I just had my best run ever by nailing about 3/4 of the bonus stages. It makes a huge difference!

From 92k to 721k and only advancing 3 more mountains?! What the F?! Surely completing the bonus stages don't give that many points. Maybe they do. I usually pooch them anyway due to the fact that you slide everywhere and jumps are almost completely vertical.

EDIT: Nevermind. Just noticed it was mountain 22,not 9. I should learn to become literate apparently.

Glad I asked now, but how do you define point racking? For example, are we allowed to go knock out a Yeti Builder's icicle even if it's slightly out of the way? Or does this only ban obvious, slow and methodical point racking? The line is very blurred in this one.

Any intentional point racking will be forbidden for this one.  If you go across the screen to destroy a yeti's icicle, that's not a big deal.  However, standing on one level and repeatedly destroying bricks or birds or anything else is not allowed.  Basically I want to forbid the slow and methodical point racking that would result in people just farming for points and not actually trying to play the game.

I'm not sure why the bonus stages are weighted so heavily in this game. It doesn't make much sense that you get around 2000 points for completing the actual mountain, but up to 70,000 points for the bonus stage alone. If I hadn't missed 4 or 5 bonus stages, I probably would have had a score around 900,000. On the flip side, if I had missed them all, I probably would have ended up with a score of around 400,000.
