Hello all and welcome! You may be aware that I love me some shmups (ugh that word amirite?), and I know some of you do too! 

This leaderboard will be a general board for all shoot-em-ups across all forms (vertical, horizontal, etc.) and all systems (Nintendo, Playstation, PC, etc.). Rather than listing out every single game ever and having a very large and very blank leaderboard I will be filling it out by system as people submit scores for games. So, say there's a game you've played not on here, you can still go ahead and post a score and I will add it to the board (assuming it is in fact a shmup). 

Also, it will exist as a general discussion thread for all things shoot-em-up. You can chat in here about the latest shmups, your favorite shmups, your hatred for the term "shmups" and my using it repeatedly. 


What Counts as a Shmup?

I've never found exclusion to be a good way of garnering attention, so this will be a very loose rule - if you THINK it is a shmup, it probably will be insofar as this leaderboard thread is concerned. I'll turn down any submissions where someone posts a score from, like, Super Mario Bros and says " Oh but I feel like it's a shmup so it should count"; obvious non-shmups won't be counted. But in general it will be a pretty open system.


How do I sign up?

Just post a score and at least photographic evidence! This will have the same basic rules as the NA contests - take a photo with a camera and your name on a piece of paper or whatever. Screenshots are not allowed.

When signing up please list out the following to go with your score (where applicable):
 

• Score
• Difficulty Level
• Level/Round Progress
• Mode

You can include any other info you think is useful too!
 

Leaderboard

Leaderboards are sorted by Console > Game Name > Score. Usernames are clickable and link to that user here on the forum, and scores are clickable and will take you to the provided proof of score (typically an image, maybe a video). I will strive to have each game contain as much info as possible but sometimes a game doesn't have levels or an ending, so stuff like "Progress" may not appear.

What the hell is a shmup?

I like shooters if thats relevant, I can't tell





 

Sounds fun. Besides not having time, I don't currently have a way to actually play most of my shooters, but will try to participate at some point

I played Abadox for a few minutes on emulator and reached the vertically scrolling second stage. My 16k score probably wasn't worth posting.

I remember renting this as a kid and continuing the second stage for hours before finally getting past it.

That zig zag portion might as well be Satan's colon. One wrong twitch and you die.  

Also doesn't help that you NEED every single powerup.

 

The first stage is stupid easy and then the second stage is ridiculous. At least Life Force has the decency to wait until the third stage for the huge difficulty spike.

Haha yeah, I chose Abadox for this month because it's not a full month and it's really a very tough game.

That said, one of the "rules" I didn't make clear in the OP: you can use continues and such, no problem. It's more about high score than progress, so whatever you want to do per game is up to you. Obviously a game with an ending and only one loop will require not using continues to get a really high score, but it's an open thing - get whatever score you can and it will be accepted!

Are you trying to ensure pegboy doesn't participate?

Shooters are one of the genres that arent that bad for playing on an emulator with a keyboard, imo

Lol I'm just trying to be inclusive. If you guys would prefer more strict rules that'd be fine. My thought was simply that someone who gets a 1LC is going to get a higher score than someone who uses continues anyway, so the more skilled player shouldn't have to worry about those who can't beat a game without getting themselves killed.

I know a lot of people who plays shmups (I'm a casual presence on the system11 forums) and there are a bunch of different opinions around on how leaderboards should function, and I get that. Thing is, this isn't system11 or any other shmup-focused forum, so my primary goal here is to have fun and get others playing shmups for fun, too. I hope to see pegboy and others pop in from time to time and post some awesome scores, I'd love some competition!

I like the genre but I suck at them. Would be easy for me to post low scores in no time.   I think I've beaten the first level of Abadox maybe a few times.
