Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests.  If last week's game didn't get you swearing like Q-Bert, this week's game is sure to make you curse like a sailor and throw your controller across the room.  This week's game is going to be Ghosts n' Goblins.  "But Bimmy" you may ask, "Why must you torture us with such a hard game?"  It is a classic platformer by Capcom that everyone needs to play at least once.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • Play until Game Over
  • Take your picture on the Title Screen
  • It is forbidden to continuously die and collect the 1-up in stage 2 to rack up points.  It will be forbidden to do this in any other places throughout the game.  Anyone suspected of using this tactic to point rack will have their score disqualified.
  • If you beat stage 6 without the shield, you are tossed back to the begining of stage 4, where you can gather an extra life at the first part of the stage and then amass a huge amount of points by doing the whole stages 4, 5 and 6 again, in both runs.  If you beat stage 6 without the shield, your attempt will end and you will have to take your picture when you restart in stage 4.  Anyone suspected of using this tactic to point rack will have their score disqualified.
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Action/Platformer

The contest ends Sunday, 9/8/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

A good first attemp. Pretty damn rusty though! With a tremendous amount of practice I should be able to get past Level 2 with only 3 lives. We will see!

173,500 points

... Bimmy, where the heck is the rule to prevent the stage 4-6-4 loop?
I messaged you questioning about it months ago!
Bad things happen when people can do that loop.

And I will have to dust off the NES to show all these youngling snapperheads how it is done on this game.

This is probably the only score that I'm going to be able to get in this week: 25,200

Probably not. Due to recent personal issues, I really haven't had any time to play at all the last few weeks. I've just been trying to get a score in each week so I can at least get a participation point until I get things straightened out.

Ah, a pity.
I hope you manage to get it all straightened out soon.

I couldn't defend my title at the Punch Out! contest this year, but now that I am done with chemo and with that bloody melanoma, I will take part on this one to defend my GnG title.
There is lots of space to improve my last run, and heck, if Bimmy doesn't ban the stage 4-6-4 loop, I will be posting my first multi million score for GnG tonight or tomorrow at latest.

Thanks, I appreciate it! I finally beat this for the first time last year and I wish I had the time to work on putting up a respectable score. It's probably going to be a while before I'll be able to put in a serious effort, so I'll just have to do what I can until then. Good luck with your run, I'd love to see that multi million point score!

26,300. posting this now 'cause I may not have anytime to update this score. I like Super Ghouls n Ghost better but at least you can't blame it on the controls (I'm just not good at it).

Score updated. Finally after about a dozen tries I get on a role. Kicked the bucket at the tail end of the 3rd level. The Dragon did me in at the very last life. Was a good ride though. May try to top this one, but it may be a tough road! ^>^

Aww, there goes the valid multi million scores.

I will get one just as an exercise of curiosity. I wonder how many loops are needed to get to the first million points.

This is probably the best solution that could possibly be made given the circumstances of how the game was designed. Well done, Kevin!

Okay. I'm done with this one. Ended up dying on the first part of stage 3 in the second loop. Now I just plan on beating the game sometime this week.

I've never owned this but I remember being happy to take such a hard game back to the rental store. Does a Wii/Wii U virtual console version count for this contest?

Only if it is exactly the same as the NES version, which I would prefer people to use.

Okay score for now. Looped the game with 4 extra lives, but made some stupid mistakes, one at my last life that costed me the run.
Could have beaten my old high score if I didn't get so cocky and over confident against the red arremer.
This will do for now. I will update this between today and tomorrow. I feel I can do much better than this.

Had very poor luck at stage 6, loop 1 and some stupid deaths at stage 2 and 5.
Every try at stage 6 had me always ending up getting another weapon after I fetched the shield, so I had to die after to try again. If I could have looped, I would.
Oh well. This will do for tonight. I will post a real score tomorrow.

Slow start with a low score just to take some of the rust off. I haven't played much since that last contest in 2011.Photo has too much glare, but the score is legible on the left side of the screen...
And tomorrow I will replace it with a more decent looking score anyway.
