For me personally when tracking on Backloggery I consider "beating the game" as getting to the end, one way or the other. Bad ending, good ending, true ending, whatever.

This is the idea of Any%, the total minimum ending or any desired ending the player gets.

Maybe we can implement something similar, with a tiered approach, and different point values for different levels of completion where applicable. On Backloggery you have "Beaten", "Completed", and "Mastered". Obviously this would be far more work, but who knows, maybe people would be apt to go above and beyond if their completion were listed in tiers like that, perhaps even with the ability to bump people off the board with a higher tier completion, or a space for each or something. 1 point per tier maybe? Dunno.

Really nice alternative and gives the players free of choice. Fair, challenging all mixed up! Perhaps Splain will eventually attempt that game on hard mode knowing it might gives you the "Mastered" badge

Some games might only have 1 or two tiers, depending on the content.

Yep, Any% or 100% if the game has no difficulty setting and/or linear storyline.

Here's some random game examples I might use:

Silent Hill 2:
  • Beat: Get any ending
  • Complete: Get the Good ending
  • Master: Get all endings

Uncharted Drake's Fortune:
  • Beat: Reach the end of the story, any difficulty
  • Complete: Reach the end of the story, hardest difficulty
  • Master: Earn all trophies (i.e. collect everything and beat it on the hardest difficulty)

Donkey Kong Country 64: The only example I can relate to. Spot on and clear to everyone.

  • Beat: Reach the end
  • Complete: 101%

Glover 64: After played this game once, I'll stick to YT%

  • Beat: Beat the game
  • Complete: Collect everything

Vigilante 8: Great example that the difficulty is just a way to get you that sweet Mastered Badge!

  • Beat: Beat the game w/ any character
  • Complete: Beat the game w/ all characters including UFO
  • Master: Beat the game w/ all characters on Unleaded

Just a fun though; I presume that a complete overhaul is out of the question, really just word vomiting here. But yeah, I'd personally go with my base "beat" requirement rules that I use on Backloggery. Even if it's a matter of that beating the game on Easy doesn't give credits, if the gameplay content is otherwise the same, I'd call it beat. It's more inclusive and certainly less daunting for those who are not great at games, but of course that means you risk getting people going "this LB is easy mode now", hence my thinking towards a tiered system. Challenge people and they will oft rise up to it.

I think we all think in the same direction. Any% seems sufficient for this LB, a clear baseline of what a player needs to do. Yet giving the option and challenge to some for completing games on greater scale. Perhaps we can introduce a point system just for the extra incentive beyond the "beat all games". This means players can play an already completed game if so desired to claim that Badge with their favorite games. Not limited to just the first person...

It would be fun to do this. It would even be fun to put the list together. Some thoughts:

- I don't want anyone to feel like they shouldn't play a game for the thread. For example, if I can't (or don't want to) put the time and work into beating Dr. Mario 64 on S-Hard mode, then what benefit is there to the thread if I play it at all? If it's likely that someone else is going to slam out the 100%/Mastered tier, then my efforts are redundant.
- It would be a little silly if we didn't get around to completing every game because we were busy 100%ing other games. Raising the completion requirements might be more fitting for the NES thread (since the NES library gets completed regularly), or maybe for N64 if we finish the library again this year, without MeridianPrime slamming titles out by the dozen
- But we should probably be doing the thing that's the most enjoyable for the most people. There's no oversight committee to make sure that our thread is trying ONLY to complete the N64 library and that points only go to the first completer, etc. If we wanted to, we could change the thread to just be a Let's Play N64 thread, so we could have fun playing N64 in different ways than carving out the library. I can think of a few really cool things we could do. But having a common goal is really fun in its own right. And we should hesitate if there are a lot of people who oppose the change.

My browser is flipping out so I'm posting this before I lose it.

And ofcourse there is that. Why would you play a game someone else will crush it with no effort what so ever. But we can't keep it at the Any%. Unless we're going to complete the list again as we're used to without my help (I still wonder... *no offense meant*) and have at least a higher baseline for 2020. Since we've already started this list and figuring out the right system would take time before it's pollished enough for release.

So, just continue as if this convo never happened and we'll build on something new for 2020?

Hey, brother! I have no delusions of staying on the top spot, I'm just in it for the delicious N64 action and to work my way through my own collection to make it seem like I got some value out of all the money I've spent, lol!

As I've said, my target is to play 40 games at least this year, and if I hit that then I'll go for 50. But, I consider the thread here to be a team event, and collaborative effort! By all means, take back the lead, we'll get there all together again this year!

Haha for sure man, it's absolutely a team effort! I see it exactly the same.

My N64 collection is much smaller so I'll be putting just a dent in the board by comparison, but maybe I can find some other way to play more. I'd like to avoid buying a bunch of carts to play and then resell, as I'd likely be out a bunch of money doing so (if only for shipping fees).

Holy moly guys... Starshot is one PAINFUL slog! Someone somewhere needs to pay for this, it almost feels vindictively bad. I'm still going, nothing can stop me, but oh boy!

I am 10 hours into Aidyn and I see what you guys were warning me about. The game play and story are alright, typical RPG of the time. The battles are a whole different story. The hit to miss ratio it terrible!! I have been pumping xp into dexterity so that the party are all in the high 20s, and I still run into common battles where it takes 15+ minutes for three enemies because I keep missing.

Great progress! You are about 20% through the game

Yes, as far as I know. I mean, I've been playing a mix of PAL, US and NTSC-J games, so I hope so!

Yep. And also, I haven't put anything about it in the OP, but you can get points for playing Japanese games that weren't released anywhere else. We just don't keep a running list of unbeaten JPN games.

The struggle is real with Starshot, but I'm still making progress. Such a fiddly, janky mess of a platformer. Never fails to not be fun, even when it risks tipping over into enjoyment. Badly designed on so many levels!

Anyone else played this game before?

It is done. Remove Starshot from the list.

I really don't know exactly how to describe my appalling abuse at the hands of this game. Perhaps in time, and with healing, the truth will come out...

Speaking of N64... Does anyone know where I can get an Everdrive (or some other equivalent)? I'd like to continue contributing after I've beaten my collection, but don't want to spend an arm and a leg on random loose carts if I can help it.

Gotta love sequel-bait endings for games with a snowball's chance in hell of getting one!

Stone Age Gamer has the Ultra Everdrive 64 in stock, or Krikzz. Not sure which everdrive is the best option.

I used an EverDrive 64 for all my N64 games. Played and finished them all. So it is a 100% coverage.
Got it from www.krikzz.com... , Version from about 2 years ago. The one before that didnt cover all.

I beat Big Mountain 2000. I had some memories of it being fun last year, but it turns out there's not a whole lot going for it. Just like last year. Even the guy who wrote the FAQ on Gamefaqs says you just have to keep trying until you get a lucky run in each event. Some guy named Splain.

Edit: Here's a screenshot. Probably very similar to last year's.

Let's start that completed Japanese games list.  Bakuretsu Muteki Bangai-O is done.

Nice! Added a table at the bottom of the OP for JPN games. I guess we'll just make JPN games worth 2.5 points across the board, which is a good average value.

I'm still alive, by the way, Starshot hasn't quite finished me off! Still a little fight in me left, yet!

I am currently getting my id on, playing through both Hexen and the ORIGINAL grey-brown shooter Quake! I really love N64 FPS games, some I'm having a great time right now! B)

I am taking a break from Aidyn to play Kingdom Hearts III. Then I will get back to the slog that is Aidyn Chronicles. 20+ minute battles for normal enemies is really wearing on me.
