I gotta know how bad that Brandish for the SNES is once you get around to it. I've had a dream or two about the psp version Dark Revenant being translated and coming to the states. *Series... just too unplayable... need english text... smooth dungeon rotation* HAS IT HAPPENED, WHAT IS THIS?

That night the Captain’s granddaughter
Would celebrate her birthday
“I’ve come a long way,” said the Captain,
“From Lost Christabel this night.
Accompanied by my dog familiar,
To blast your rafters with my surprise.
Granddaughter, It’s a foreign mirror
Taken from the jungle by crime!”

My friend and I managed to play Brandish about a half hour a few months ago. The instantly rotating screen ruined the game for my friend while only slightly annoying me.

The idea could make for some interesting puzzles but the game seemed to be more or a dungeon delving rogue-a-like including weapons with limited uses.

The review is pretty solid, at least when talking about Brandish, from what little I've seen. My first thought when I read your post before clicking the link was Brandish could be good but really needs a mini map and or large map. Also a dedicated attack button instead of a weird combo block-attack button but that may be a rogue-a-like thing. Either way the review makes the game sound almost tolerable for the average human. I would not call Brandish bad but I did not get far enough to run into "dropping steels balls on each and every tile of floor to check for traps" so the game could get worse...

And for some RPGs, that's all we could ever hope for.

On a related note, have you ever noticed that there are so many argueably subpar RPGs which have excellent soundtracks? Brandish, Eternal Poison... and I'm sure some would say Lagoon. It's almost like there's some sort of law of inverse proportions in effect. Maybe bad RPGs are purely a government program in Japan intended to feed the families of talented composers??

Yes. Two of my favorite game soundtracks are from lousy RPGs: Star Ocean and Chrono Cross. I also like Legend of Legaia's soundtrack, a game I gave away after 5 hours of play when it was first released. It is not as bad, just generic, from what I recall.

But it's not an RPG exclusive thing. A lot of LJN games have music by Tim Follins, like Silver Surfer, and it is awesome.

Haha, I actually like Star Ocean for the ps1; my only real complaint with it was the 80+ endings marketing hype. If you couldn't quite get into it but if still want to give the battle and crafting systems a chance, try 'til the End of Time. A lot of folks might knock Square's involvement, but I found that one to be a much more streamlined experience.

I'm sure Chrono Cross is someone's favorite game. And why not.

Star Ocean the Second Story I've tried to like multiple times. I've probably put 20 hours into the game with all the attempts but I'm struggling to NOT start bitching about it. Chrono Cross, like Final Fantasy IX, I play, or watch video of, more often then not to keep remind my self of the various aspects of the game because I feel those two RPGs are straight up bad games that people think are good or excellent. Not that there is anything wrong with liking "bad game," in fact I encourage people to like bad games, but I want people to recognize the weaker aspects of those games because I feel a lot of people who play RPGs turn their brain off and zone out when playing and recall none of the game except that time passed and they are not bored or injured so it must have been time well spent!

Bitching about entertainment. This is the good life.

And the reason why I want to people to recognize the flaws of certain games is in part to recognizing the greatness of others.

There is nothing wrong with classifying games with a binary system and in fact I think that might be one of the best ways to review games, but with FFIX considered good, the line separating good games is so low almost everything is good and it takes away from games like FFVI which are exceptional.

If I was a good brief reviewer most my reviews would be:
This game is awesome because...
or
I want to like this game but...
or
This game is terrible because...
and then I would succinctly explain why.

But I am not. And one reason is Growlanser Wayfarer of Time. I would start that review with "I like this game, but," and then explain why I'm giving up on it despite liking it. I mean if I like a game, why not complete it?

The problem with Growlanser is focus. Remember in FFVI how you always were doing something related to the Empire or Kefka, and the same with FFVII with Shinra or Sephiroth, and how in Chrono Trigger the game is focused on saving the world from Lavos?

I fucking love that. A well written focused story is such a turn on.

This game kind of has focus, I mean, it's no where near as bad as the fetch quests in Breath of Fire II or like FFIX which has no focus at all, but the story drags. The game gives you little tidbits and then sends you off to get a few more. They're not fetch quests, they are tied to the world and story and you get something, but that something is so miniscule that after 20 hours into the game I think I'm only 10% into the game.

Me and a friend beat Heart of Darkness for the PSX. Pretty neat game. Hard though, as expected.

We've been stuck in Lost Vikings for some time. Some of the later levels get to the point where they are too many things to remember and any mistake results in death. I keep wanting to compare Lost Vikings to Ninja Gaiden. A lot of Ninja Gaiden is memorizing enemy locations, how to deal with it, and having the reflexes to carry it out. There is a surprising amount of dexterity needed in Lost Vikings, in fact maybe even more, because the controls in Lost Vikings are no where near as responsive and quick as in Ninja Gaiden so things that require precise controller input are brutal.
