Any tips for the volcano? It stops me dead in my tracks

Make sure that you have missiles and options equipped, then stay in the upper left corner of the screen so that the missiles drop onto the volcano below you.

It's also good to have the shield by that point, because from time to time a projectile will defy the odds and make it to your ship anyway.
I just figured this one out by myself on first try, but oh man this isn't my genre. My thumb and nerves are already aching...

Speaking of thumbs hurting...

This game sometimes decides to let you shoot at a very fast rapid fire rate, just by holding the button down.  Does anyone know what triggers this?

I was trying to figure that out as well.  Best I can find is that it's a glitch.  I thought it might be do to switching between double and laser or more speed, but nothing I tried would get it to happen.  Very nice when it does

I had 7 lives, and then I just got totally pummeled... I know I can do better... And I did, on page 7

Somehow I warped after level 1 to the level with the shooting stone heads. How did that happen? Also I see that just like Life Force, this game has the invisible bonus points and 1ups scattered around. I'm gonna try and beat the game without looking anything up. Then hopefully if I beat it I'll do some research to jack my score up a little bit.

Refer me to the rules all ya want. I'm not participating because I think emulators are cheating. Gradius is an 8-10 dollar game. But hey, thats just like, my opinion, man.

According to GameFAQs, it happens if you destroy four of the hatches on level 1 when the thousands digit of your score is an even number.

I've never heard of this or had it happen to me. Can you do it with the lasers?

More or less. I'm still not sure I even understand what it means.

You guys aren't talking about when your closest to the right side of the screen? I know a few shooters where that happens when your closest to the oncoming, scrolling part of the screen (whichever direction that happens to be).

Yes, and it's very obvious when it happens, because you can just hold the button, and your lasers will be in pretty much a constant stream.  It doesn't seem to happen very often, though.

The rapid fire thing is triggered when you have your power meter on the last space, then collect a pod when you score's thousands digit is a zero (I think?). May need to verify this in my notes later.

I think you can also trigger a 5000 point bonus if you do the same thing with a five in that thousands digit.

Also note: The rapid fire is lost when you beat the game, but can be collected again in the same manner.

I think you guys are gonna have to look out for Balloon Kid this week. I'm predicting him to take home the gold on this one. That is unless Tom is feelin froggy and laces up his boots.
