Born and raised in Maryland, this didn't strike me as strange. I don't think it was used frequently but enough that I remember hearing it and not giving it a second thought. 

Reminds me of this though (Jerry Reed):

I always put the lays chips on my bologna sammies. And the cheap single slice American cheese that takes skill to peel it off without tearing it. 

The bologna with the ring always gives me a nostalgic trip 

also always reminds me of the dog on the street with that guilty look and the ring from the bologna hanging out of his ass. He knows everyone knows he was eating out of the trash.
