He was always pretty upfront about buying it for data mining. I don't recall him saying anything about improving the site. But even if he did, his recent conversations with people (when he has communicated) suggested that is no longer on the table. Even when others offered to do all the work, that was left hanging. So our choices are to stay here in a forum with an unresolved exploit that could result in a malicious attack that would bring it down for good (and an admin that would probably let it stay down), or create a new, secure forum. That's where we are at with this.

That makes sense, I didn't see that posted anywhere else. Which data could he possibly have wanted? Posts?

With a new owner, hope and request for some modicum of modernization were both renewed. But it turns out "nothing will change" cuts both ways, and all such questions have been pretty much ignored.
There's a lot more, but that's some of the gist of it.

I knew all this went down, but I never read the original post. Reading that seriously got me pissed. Crazy that all the hard work and time people put into some of this data gathering can just be bought up by someone who's been creeping on the site for a couple years and dragged off to help grow some company/site I've never heard of.

Fuck it. Let's pick a name and start this bad boy up... I'm ready to get out of here. Purpleganon. Boom. Let's go

Another problem is user attrition. I've seen other forums die off. Even if there is never an attack or exploit on NA, people just stop posting. Much of the old guard has rehashed conversations many times; there's only so much one person can say about old tapes. Lots of people change responsibilities or hobbies IRL.

As I said in the thread that spawned this one, we do see some new people popping up. But not many of them are highly active. In 2019 it's generally difficult to get people interested in internet forums at all.* A clunky, hard-to-navigate, old-fashioned site amplifies that. We really want to update this forum (and stay here), but it's not possible to change it at all. The reason for that is unknown. It kind of sucks, but we should move forward if we want to continue to have this community. It has been pretty clearly non-stated that staying here is not the way to do that.

* This is why it's important to pick a good name; purple ganon isn't gonna fly. Especially with the double and triple meta jokes about the joke; do a web search and you'll quickly find the ridiculous urbandictionary entry... I can't believe that was a serious contender

Memorable, unique, has meaning, stands out in the crowd of 10,000 sites with similarish names, pays homage to its predecessor site, references one of the most popular IPs in gaming which could only help usher new people in, even if by accident, lends itself to all sorts of logo possiblities...

And it brings along the meta and double meta jokes as a free bonus

I know the whole collecting in the name thing has already been discussed, but I actually really like Collectionist or Collectionism, has a nice ring to it, and it's memorable. Kind of reminds me of the term completionist.

Also I have to admit I do unironically like PurpleGanon. All jokes aside, it is a name you'd easily remember if you were a newcomer. I think it does a good job of portraying that it is a video games-related forum, it doesn't mention collecting in it's name, and it keeps a little bit of NA with it without being overt, so it doesn't turn people off like some people theorize having "Age" in the name might. You'd have to have been a member of this site for awhile to even know Purple Ganon was a reference to this place at all, and if that did become the name, I'd imagine the urban dictionary definition of it would eventually be buried under all the actual threads relating to the website.

Hell if PurpleGanon isn't gonna slide just give it some other color. GreenGanon here we come!

Yeah, honestly I do kind of agree with Brock on this one. I honestly think it's a good name, but I totally understand if it isn't the one we end up going with.

Meh. It was a great gag at the time. But I'm not down with the whole fauxmosexual thing that it has morphed into. And I'll call back to Splain's point about forced references.

I am all for juvenile humor but this is ridiculous. If this was the first thing I saw about NA it would put me off. First result on google and duckduckgo

Purple Ganon

The act of two male video game collectors wearing Power Gloves and grasping each other's erect penises, thus constricting the tips until they are engorged and resemble a Purple Ganon.

Purple Ganons are a fairly commonplace event when collectors exchange high-end Nintendo NES items, often accompanied by penis pictures.

The guy who sold that copy of 'The Legend of Zelda' really gives a mean Purple Ganon!

Please, no dumb joke names. Just pick something generic about collecting, without Nintendo in the title or any other copyrighted term. You're limiting your audience quite a bit if you pick a childish name.

I think it would be great if the new site's initials were also NA...

Well, if that's really it then.. ok! Filthy, yet charming. Obtuse, yet vivid. You'd have to do some mild digging to get to the root of the reference, so there's a chance it will take on a more benign meaning for the new community. Naming a gaming community after a made-up sex act is a bold move.

Lol come on, collectionist/collectionism is the most elitist, self-righteous bullcrap term ever. You can't be serious

Have you heard the clip from the CU Podcast about the self-coined "Collectionist" ? If not, it's a must-listen.

I'm just not one to view things as elitist or pretentious, and I wasn't aware of the origin of that word. I just thought "Yeah, it's a forum of mostly collectors, and it has a nice ring to it. Makes sense to me." I suppose it was a similar reaction to someone who didn't know the origin of the term purple ganon
