Bonus room is the 2nd room on the lower path and it is impossible to miss.

On the upper path, since the bonus room appears later, it actually is possible to miss.

Okay, thanks!  I see what you mean.

For fun, if anyone would appreciate some insight in my thought process, I figured out why I take the upper path always.  Basically you have to take the upper path in the first stage to get to the bonus room, so it's easier to just always take the upper path so I know for sure I won't miss out ... I would hate to ruin a run because I forget which stage I'm on somehow.  My internal algorithm for picking paths is to always go up if possible, otherwise go right if possible, otherwise go down.  Doing that will ensure I always hit the top bonus room.  Keeps it simple if I always do the same thing!

That room is either REALLY easy (if you have a missile launcher) or pretty tough (if you have a non-explosive weapon).

I can't remember what weapon I had. I just started getting tired and lost focus. Most likely I had the spread gun as it's by far my favorite.

As far as the score, what I've been doing is I'll try to run circles around the enemies and shoot them when I can if I have a weapon that doesn't have a wide range like the rocket launcher so I don't get killed from them swarming me from multiple directions but if I have a weapon like the grenades or the spread shot then I stand in middle of the room and fight, taking out most/all the enemies that come from one direction. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Playing this way is more effective than just "guns a blazin'." It saves weapon ammo for when you really need it plus it allows you to maneuver without fear of being killed near the doorways. It takes longer but it is a lot less risky. And as far as picking up prizes,I left a lot on the table. My priorities were: Conserve lives, conserve weapons, collect money/prizes.

Also I denoted the room in which I died to be as transparent as possible for this contest. Maybe this should have been a low scoring contest. Matter of fact next time I play I think I will play as if it is indeed a low scoring contest.

Just as a benchmark -  a "guns blazing" game that picks up 90%+ of the drops is only sitting around 6 - 6.5MM by the time you get to that particular room, and barely has over 8MM by the time you reach the final boss.

But as a strategy, I can't disagree with your methods, since that is a lot more reliable that how I play.  (i.e. only fighting when you have a weapon of mass destruction versus the pea shooter).

Score updated!

Game cleared. It seemed that I got more points taking the lower path in both stages 2 and 3.

I'm sure at least one person will top this score but I'm satisfied.

Don't have much time to game these days but I decided it was time to bust our a random game. Played maybe 3 times this being my best. Hope I will find time to improve before the contest is over.

I remember proposing this to Bimmy, but I think the difficulty to figure out where the player is exactly in the game (given the screeenshot) was a big problem.

I'm just playing it as a low scoring contest anyway and only purposefully collecting treasure in the treasure rooms. I died in the room called total carnage I believe and I had roughly 4.1 million.

Playing this as a low score contest would be pretty difficult and not much fun, in my opinion. This game is all about shooting bad guys and collecting prizes, so avoiding doing this just wouldn't make it that much fun to me.

Has anyone else cleared a room and never get the exits to come up and had to reset? This just happened on my latest run and it's the second time it has happened to me.

I have had it take awhile because I was ahead of the item spawning sequence.

I've had that happen too,but I've gotten the exits to come up when that's happened. The two times I've had it happen, the enemies came out of sequence, which was weird.

Took the upper path the whole way through, because if you can maintain a missile launcher to start most rooms it is easy pickings.

Also, managed to get to the Cobra Twins with a missile launcher in tow, so made short work of them, since that lets you fight them individually.

Had 8 lives in reserve for the MC (the Key Rooms were much easier than I remembered from yesterday, but I think it came down to having the right weapon equipped).

Finally got the run I wanted with this one. I actually almost reset early on after having a rough start but decided to play it out. Let's just say I'm glad I did.

The rooms in this game are way too freaking long. Makes the game tedious. Starting to lose interest in this one. Plus it's pretty unfun to spend a lot of time on a run and get really far into the game only to die on some garbage.

Probably part of why I never beat it as a kid.

Though 2 player 4 controllers is a ton of chaos.

I think it should be a requirement that each person posts their pic wielding the dual-controller setup
