about 6 months ago i posted a demo over at nesdev

Pitfall

i recently started working on this project again and am looking for someone to compose some soundfx and/or music. all i can offer is a spot on the credits screen, which is what i'm getting.

edit: the animation has been smoothed out considerably since the demo.

I can't help with your music problem, though I know there are a couple of guys here that can. I'll let them out themselves.

Your demo is a lot of fun. It'll be cool to see a finished product.

I played this demo a while back, and was really impressed. You should get with mewithoutyou52, he makes some amazing NES tunes.

I could probably recreate some of the Atari sound effects, although I use Famitracker for my sound engines and it's limited in terms of having multiple tracks of one NSF play together (i.e. music + sound effects...). I REALLY need to find a way around this for my third game. I don't know if you know anything about the Famitracker program.

i've used famitracker and nt2 before, but never got more then a few blips and bleeps out of them.

how difficult would it be to modify the sound code to allow soundfx to interrupt the song?

Well, if by "interrupt" you mean stop the entire song and treat the sound effect like a new song, that is easy (as that's what I did for both my games). But if you mean to play sounds while the song is playing, I really don't know. The author said he'd "look into it", though I don't know if he'll be successful. I've not looked at the code myself.

It's a shame, because I've gotten some pretty good sound effects out of that thing and I think it really would make a good sound tool for any game developer if it weren't for that problem.

Just wondering: Do you go to the #nesdev room on IRC? JSR, the author, hangs out there. Maybe if another person talks to him, he'll be more willing to help. It kinda seems I was the lone game developer using his program. Heh.

There's also an official #famitracker on Espernet.

I made a messed-up Pitfall 2 cover in nerdtracker2, it'd be fun to redo it.

I also am in need of a working sound-fx system, so that is what I will be writing. Unless my work calls me, it will be done soon. The easy way to make it work is to reserve RAM as a buffer for writes to the sound registers, change the music engine so it only writes to the buffer, overwrite any sfx into the buffer, then output your sound update.

But I don't have any code to do the actual sound effects separately yet, I need to write that also.

sivak: not really, i usally just stick to the forums.

buffering the data is a much more elegant way of doing it then what i was thinking. how large would this buffer have to be?

Up to 21 bytes with DPCM, 17 bytes without it. Could cut it down a bit for any unused registers.

Memblers, if you can come up with something that might be compatible with Famitracker, let mein on it too.
