I tried tonight, my high score was 66,000. Not too bad for not playing the game in years. How are you guys starting on level 15, 16 and up? I'm only able to play on up to level 9 for b-type.

If you hold "A" when you press "Start" it will add 10 to your starting level. The same works in A-Type for massive high scores.

I think 17 is doable as well. 18 is a stretch, and I'm pretty sure 19 is impossible to do all tetrises without the universe being in perfect alignment to force the random block generator to give you EXACTLY what you need.

make your well in the middle, it makes it harder to stay perfect, but gives you much more room to move

I honestly don't think I would be in the running even if I were to try and cheat on an emulator - I was just wondering cos I don't have that game. Heck I dont have many games at all!

To beat our scores you MUST have a perfect game.  Otherwise you'll be at least 10,000 points short at any level.

NES King - I know 18 is doable, because I've finished it without any problems.  The issue is getting is PERFECT with all tetrises

So 2 tetrises away. That's how close I've come on 16.

Unless I get lucky it looks like you might take this one. My tetris abilities are nothing to scoff at, but I've never valued slamming down the pieces for few extra points...and that might win it for you.

there is one huge difference (at least to me).  the NES version starts the piece moving quickly left or right if your thumb (or finger) is already pressing the direction when it appears.  it makes a considerable difference at the high levels.
the reason that i know this, is because Thor Aackerlund did not have a NES before 1990 and only played tetris on his game boy.  because his piece wouldn't move smoothly he developed the "hyper tapping" technique where he rapidly vibrated the direction pad, and made the piece move quickly.
Had he owned the NES version, I'm guessing that he wouldn't have had to ever learn to do that, and would be used to just pressing it like the rest of us.  in short, Thor's lack of a NES, was possibly the main reason he was superior in 1990.

Isn't their 4 songs on the GB version? I only recall the second song on the Nes version. I don't even have a chance to win this I can only get 29k on level 6 level 9 is insane for me and 15 hahahahaha I was lucky to make one line let alone any tetris's

i2a2n2 - keep at it. I'd love to see how well some other people manage to do.

Robin - you might be right about the control differences. I grew up on the GB version as well, so maybe I've never noticed how the NES version works differently

Whoa!  That's at LVL 18, right?

EDIT:

Just did the math:  "minimum" perfect score at LVL 18 is 167,600... so LVL 18 looks like the new par for the course

At this level it gets a helluva lot harder to slam down pieces for the extra points, too.  So eeking out more than a couple hundred extra will be damn near impossible.

The next rung in the ladder starts at  177,000. (perfect game at LVL 19) Yeah, right

Yeah, level 18.  You have no idea how many times I've played tetris as a kid.  If I remember right, there is a big jump from 18 to 19, so I thought I'd take a shot at 18.  It took a number of tries, but it's kinda nice that the game is so quick that you can start right back up.

Might as well promote the only youtube videos I've ever uploaded.  My friend and I played some 2 player games, and he is right around the same level (depends on the day, hehe).  Here's 1 of the 6 videos:

Yeah, the jump between 18 and 19 is pretty severe.

I've always played tons of Tetris, but I've always played A-type for high score/high lines.
The difference in strategy with B-Type is interesting. Luck is WAY more important in B-Type since you can't afford to make anything but tetrises, whereas you are able to make survival moves in A-Type and still get huge scores.

Hi, yeah that's me.  I am on the right side in that video, and Howard is on the left.  And that's my adorable son who needs to go pee-pee.    Howard was actually listed as 2nd place in the NWC repro contest, even though he sent me the video of him getting 4.5 million.  That NWC repro cartridge was a dream come true to me, since I don't have thousands to spend on a game.

I thoroughly enjoyed your article on the NWC by the way.  I have written a couple of NWC articles myself (be happy to grab some links for you if you're interested).  I don't have nearly the same level of fame as your NWC experience making it to the finals, but I'm just a guy that cherishes his weekend at the event.
