Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests!  This week's game begs a very important question: If you give a Yoshi a cookie, will he want a glass of milk?  Hell yes!  And he is going to want more cookies, too!  That's right, you guessed it.  This week's game is going to be Yoshi's Cookie.  Here are the rules:

  • Choose 1 player game
  • Start on Round 1
  • Set your speed to Slow
  • Play until Game Over
  • When you get a Game Over, take your picture on the Continue screen
  • You cannot play any further than level 10-10 (beating the game)
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Puzzle

The contest ends Sunday, 3/16/14 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

The longer the cookie chain, the higher the point combos. Goes 10, 20, 40, 80, 160, 320 and I think you can even get a 640 in there for an 8-chain. Also there may be extra points for clearing so many cookies chains of the same type (the counter in the bottom right corner), but I dont recall for sure.

Not to "give the game away", but is the expectation that you milk each level for as long as possible?

I played a couple of times yesterday just burning through levels and did OK, but the per-level scoring was pretty low.

I gave it a go, milking it, during a break today and it seems like you can get around 12k just on the first level before the speed becomes dangerous.
(ramps up pretty quickly on the next sets of levels, though, seems to make it tough to get much more than 5 - 8k per level)

Scratch that... 20k + is definitely possible on 1-1! (though I pulled a 64x multiplier at one point!)

I was wondering the same thing. Which way to play, beat the level or milk it.

"Milking it", it seems like I can get as many points by 1-4 as I would otherwise have by 5-1...

If you milk it for too long, your cookies will get soggy!!!

Sorry, it was too easy. I had to.

Also, just realized the "Yoshi" cookies are a doubler...and they stack.

So if you can line up a shit-ton of Yoshi cookies you can get some big numbers.

I was messing around with the game last night. You can score as many points as you want as long as you can deal with the increased speed.(I think.) I almost had 20k in 1-1 but that run and similar ones got screwed up because the speed increase happens faster than I usually account for. And as far as the Yoshi cookies,I've gotten 3 at one time before and clearing a line of cookies with 3 Yoshi's will give you 2540 points.

I have yet to see more than 3 Yoshi cookies at once (and I definitely cleared more than 3 sets of cookies).

It may be a hard limit.

They do factor with the multiplier though, if you can get them to stack later in a combo.

You can tell this was a late addition to the NES library.  The font on the game screen that tells you to start and when the level is done looks very much like  Pilotwings or Link to the Past SNES font and not much at all like typical on screen NES font.

My sister is a graphic designer.  Apparently I listen to her talk about work too much...

I didn't do any "milking" in the early levels.  Actually, it was the opposite as I tried to finish each as quickly as possible.  After I saw that I wasn't getting any early finish bonus, that strategy seemed pretty silly, but I decided to just push on.  This game is fun, and I hope to get after it a little more this week.

That's the cool thing about this week is that you can pick which way you want to go with. Do I just speed through the game or milk the levels? I do wonder though if milking so much early on makes the later levels a lot tougher than if you just played them normally.

I find milking it to be in bad taste, but it is technically allowed in this contest. Later levels provide the challenge which is what I enjoy about this game. I guess I'll have to learn to milk if I want to place this week after all.

There's likely a balance.  I see it kind of like stacking up to get a Tetris early in that game vs working more to keep the screen clear later on.

Once you are around 15-20k in 1-1 it gets pretty darn fast, so there is plenty of challenge there and you are always one or two wrong moves away from disaster.
