Score update page 1.
I got some really favourable patterns that were very easy to read, but I went for the smaller, 1.7 million points combo on 1st stage to be sure I would make to wave 56 again.

Bumped down to third again. My third consecutive third place finish in a row.

But it ends this week. I seriously doubt that I'll make top three in Contra.

Thanks for pushing me to break 3 millions, Red.
This week was quite fun. I will record a 3 millions run tomorrow, most likely, while I wait for the everdrive to get here so I can get some Contra action going.

Red's #1 score from the previous Klax contest would have gotten 5th place this week, I think.

Yep. The level of the field is kinda high these days, specially when a game with a rng that is not random at all like this one comes around.

Haha, don't stress yourself out.  I'm just going to post my (lower than yours) score from earlier in the week.

Just how hard is the 2.2M combo to setup? Did you do it? Can you get it almost every time with the right pattern?

I think all the high scoring combos in Wave 1 are more luck than anything.  Easy if you get the right blocks, impossible if you don't.  Sadly, I never legitimately got the biggest combo (I turned the drop meter off for the picture I posted showing the combo set up).  I did get the right blocks in one game, but I was already set up for another combo at the time.

It is doable, but very, very difficult.
The tile patterns are fixed, so you can plan in advance just by looking to the starting tile on the paddle, the colour and position of the first tile on the belt.
Reset till you get the pattern you want and get the big combo. I usually get the 1.7 million combo instead because the 2.2 is too risky and I have too many tiles on the belt at the end.
Better get a smaller combo and make to wave 2 than to screw up everything by being greedy.

Where did your Airman figure come from? Looks cool.

I bought it online somewhere. I think it was made by Bandai. It's definitely from Japan. I don't recall the company now. Guts has a Cutman that is equally cool that I've not bought yet.

Glad you did.  I didn't spend as much time on this as I could have.  I thought I could easily break 3 million if I got the 1.6 or 1.7 million combos again, but I didn't want to put in the time.  When I saw you didn't even get 3 million, I kinda wished I played a bit more.

Based on your post with the array of tiles, I began analysis of the patterns late last night. I don't yet have conslusive evidence to show this, but you can see patterns in the data. It's worth noting that wave 1 does not appear to ever spawn anything but light blue, pink, yellow, or red tiles. I've not completed analysis of wave 2, but it does add a tile (and I don't have enough data yet to know if it's one tile or a set of tiles). This is a behavioral analysis from game play, not reverse engineering of the code, so there is likely more to it.

You shouldn't be too much worried about Doug's rankings, lol.

Hey, it was a typo! That interview literally lasted four weeks!   I'm still sticking with the me being second to Tom ranking though.

I personally, completely and absolutely agree with you, but,

it seems the numbers don't, haha! Aren't you sure your 2013 arch rival wasn't Vectrex instead?

The RNG code in this game is overly simplistic.
And as per the nature of pseudo random random number generator codes, it is deterministic.

Good one! I guess technically we were both still second to Tom.

I've been thinking that there is an advantage to playing this on an emulator because of the amount of resets required to get the desired pattern of tiles. I'd be afraid of wrecking my NES from resetting it that much.

Final scoreboard posted. Sorry about the slow response on updates. New house stuff has definitely kept me busy, busy enough to not have time (nor a hooked up console) to play this past week.

Great job to everyone though!

I legit started this contest disliking this game and having no idea what the heck I was doing. It's crazy that I finished in third place.
