nice score man. i just tried last night and the highest score i could get was around 200,000. looks like you won this one.

I had the spread gun for nearly the entire first and second run.  I died on level four on the third way through and lost my spreader (freak accident) and then lost quite a few guys at random spots in the game.

Does anyone know if the game continues to get faster and have more enemies on screen after each time you beat it, or does it only get harder after the first time you beat the game (and then stay the same there after)?  I ask this because I beat it with ease the first and second time, but the third and especially the 4th seemed really hard.  I swear the enemies were all over the damn place on the fourth time through.

You mind listing the locations of the spread guns?  I tried this out on Wednesday night and good god it's been while   It used to be smooth sailing until Stage 6 for me but I was having problems even getting to the Stage 4 base without losing a life or two.

I know there's the obvious one at the top route of Stage 1 past the second bridge.  There's also one towards the top of the waterfall level a bit past where the invincibility ("B") appears on the left by the fire bridge.  I know there's one hidden in some of the red guys in the base stages, do you know which screens?

I've always thought it's "more fun" to just ad-lib without the spread gun, but when going for points it's an absolute must IMO.

There are two in the first stage, the obvious one that comes from the left of the screen on the top after you've cleared the exploding bridges, and then a second right after the laser comes from the left, it's at the bottom of the screen.

I don't think any of the red dudes in the 2nd stage carry a spreader.

There's the one in the waterfall about halfway up.

Stage 4 one of the red guys has one, but man, I can't remember which.

The Snowfield has one, it appears from the left with two others, it's the one on the bottom (the awesome weapon of mass destruction is on the middle) just before the series of jumps over the water.

The energy zone... maybe doesn't have one?

The hangar has one, but it sucks to get, it pretty much means you have to take the harder route on the botttom of the screen (with the dropping spikes as opposed to the walls you can shoot away). It appears with another from the left (in those lovely football things) on the bottom of the screen (the Machine gun is on the top), right before the jump either to the top half where the spiked walls are, or the bottom where the cart track is and the dropping spikes. It's about a third through the level.

There's a spreader about halfway through the Alien's Lair, comes from the left when you're on the middle island of the jump section (it's kinda hard to describe, but it's almost literally halfway through the level).

I think that's about all of them... there may be one in level 6 I'm forgetting though. Hope that's at least sorta helpful.

Yes, it starts getting noticeably harder around the 3rd and 4th time.  By you're third run expect to see hordes of red/white soldiers and around the fourth time through the enemies get tougher.  For instance, the yellow shrimp looking monsters that come out of the Red Falcon's mouth in the last stage only take about 3 shots to kill in the first run, while they take 7-10 in later runs... and are a pain in the ass!  The spiders in the last stage too!

What I find odd though is that most of the bosses stay the same.  I can kill the boss in the snow field in one appearance with the spread gun in my first time through as well as my sixth time.  It doesn't get any tougher. 

Oh, and what's my prize?  

I think it's the room with one crystal right smack in the middle, with those holes at the bottom that shoot out rollers. It's like the 3rd last room.

Besides for those damn shrimp getting harder,(I HATE THEM!) one thing to note also is that after the 6th time through you stop earning free guys for some reason. So stock up as many as you can, because after that, your gonna need em!
Ive also noticed that the guns that pop out of the ground in level one are much faster, they shoot as soon as they appear, whereas in the first iteration they wait a moment to shoot.

Yea, I came so close to maxing out. I need a break for a day or so.
I forgot about that, I was trying to figure out if you stopped earning lives when you reach a certain score or hit a certain amount of times through.

I would've maxed but screwed up on the last board. Had 5 lives left, stupidly jumped on the 1st shrimp of the board and lost my spread. Died shortly thereafter. If I beat it that time it would've pushed my score over.

That sucks. The battles with the shrimp monster definitely become epic there in the latter runs lol. Trying to dodge 4 shrimp and find time to get some hits in on the boss ><
Im not certain if you stop earning lives after a certain number of times through, or if after earning a certain number of lives, or just a certain score. Ive just noticed its around the 6th time through, so when you have ~4500K points or so.
Its funny how the most basic enemies become your biggest threat when your on the later runs. Bastards.

Q: What was the largest surplus of guys you had?
I think I had 34 dudes at one point.

Most for me I think was like 28.

Damn, you guys are some serious Contra pros. Looks like I know what I'll be doing for the next few hours! I wasn't sure if I was losing my touch or just getting tired, because I thought it started getting quite a bit harder on the 4th run through.
Does it keep on getting harder after that, or does it start to stay the same after a while.

Haha, I thought this might happen. I scored a 4 million something score this afternoon on my first try (I used to play a lot of Contra). I was planning on getting the max score possible tomorrow. Is Cremorecs score the max??

I got the high score after killing red falcon and it took me to level 7 again just to get the goddamn picture!  I died 32 times (33 by the time I got the picture) and beat the game 8 times to get the score.  So now I'm putting Contra on the shelf for a long, long time.

how do you kill those spiky tank things in the snowy area (stage 5) with the pea shooter? just shoot like mad? i can get to stage 5 without dying but it's downhill from there fast

You just shoot them like crazy.  If you have the spreader they will die pretty quickly.

Yea, you can do it but you have to shoot like mad.  It'll explode right before it closes in on you.
I find that the best weapon throughout the game is the spread, you should always have it.






No I didn't.  I played some the night before, put the game on pause and finished the next day.

yeah i can keep spreader from level 1 but i always die a bunch in level 5.. haven't been able to pass 6 w/o 30 lives code yet :'(
