Not a chance. If I'm going to invest coin into a new retro console, it will be the avs for certain.

I wasn't aware that Drakon's work had the reputation of being a "hot glue special".

Do a google search you'll be very horrified with the images you'll find. It's actually kind of sad and I would be pissed if that's how my stuff came back. He also charges to fix his mistakes as well. It's really sad as I thought he was an okay fella, but man was I wrong on that one.

I just googled and found this thread: http://shmups.system11.org/viewto...

Jesus. I feel bad for bursting out laughing when I saw the melted AV Famicom.
Awesome quote:

...Drakon's work looks like Peter North shot his load all over it.

Not even looking into the details, I say it is hype. Either 1. they are emulating the NES or 2. they have salvaged many consoles to make it. In both cases, RGB is RGB. For $500 I could afford Drakon to video mod an NES and still have change to buy a game.

Sure, externally it looks pretty but it sstill plays NES games like a used NES and will get a dirty connector when you put your dirty games in it.

Yeah, for $500 you could buy a hot glue special and then pay someone to fix it when it
doesn't work right.  Not my first choice.

That's really too bad.   But I do recall his prices looking too good to be true. (relative to what I'm familiar with from Ben Heckendorn and the more experienced modders on his forums)

It really is, but what can ya do? ]]>

Here is a cost comparison
AV Famicom $100
NESRGB $90
NES/Famicom adapter $30
Install fee $50-100 (or install yourself if you got skills)

So you would be in about $300 for that setup.  I think it's fair if you consider the features and uniqueness of it.
Now does the Famicom 15 pin controller port work for everything and is the expansion audio wired correctly for games like Gimmick?  I would be concerned about those issues.
