This is a strange game for sure. I’ve played hundreds of hours and stage 5 is the only one I have consistent problems with. As far as I can tell it’s all about doing the rooms in certain order. Like using certain CM’s in certain rooms. I have a hand drawn guide/map that I use and can beat the game 2 of three times I play it given I have enough time. Also, it’s a must to sacrifice lives sometimes to keep the damn super gun. 
In the last year this game had become my favorite obsession 😂
 

I had a lot of fun reading my thread and I saw you added a whole lot of stuff and dropped off.  I just got an AVS and have been ignoring my NES the past few months but getting this game a solid strat is def a good excuse to fire it up even more.

What you've been saying is what ive been saying for a long time.  Its a puzzle game with the CMs, what room to put them in and where.  IMO once you get to level 5, its much easier to finish than struggling at 4.
 

I need to post my strat. While I fell off the thread I’ve kept on playing. I just need to figure out how to make maps and whatnot!

There's clearly ways of shooting a virus that results in either it duplicating themselves or diminishing, as its designed by how real viruses work... but I sort of doubt a lot of Mutant Virus players ever has used that. I'm willing to bet everybody just blast until the viruses are gone and hope it reduces the viruses. Thats a possible flaw with the game - its too difficult to aim and use real anti-virus strategy. At least I never found a way to exploit it while I was actively trying. I remember Room 5 lacked one CM so when I beat it I just spent forever in the last room. It looked like I was losing against the viruses, like I had done many times previous, but by some miracle the room suddenly just cleared. One of my most memorable gaming moments.

I personally (respectfully) disagree with Guitarzombie's idea that there is some golden strategy with beating this game, and even less that this is secretly a puzzle game. I don't think it is. I think beyond putting the right CMs in the strategic places its just a really slow action game where a lot of the trick is persistence, patience and a bit of luck. For sure a puzzle game 😜
